“So I need to get you out of the country and onto my private island.” I open one eye and look at him.

“You have a private island?” He smirks and lifts his tablet.

“No, but give me thirty minutes.”

MIYA

Genevieve has been remanded into my custody, pending her hearing tomorrow. We are heading to the hotel. I figured you’d want to know.

Abel’s text calms me only slightly since we have our own problems here to deal with. I look up and see Satan staring me down. I nod at him so as to not interrupt Abe, who is talking. His shoulders relax, and he sits back a little.

It’s the only visible difference he shows, completely engaged in the here and now that he doesn’t have one of his own behind bars any longer.

“Aurora can’t stay here. I’m getting the trailer ready. Take a leave of absence at the hospital, love.” Dee stands and kisses her husband on her way out.

“So that’s it? I just run from the bastard? For how long? That’s not a life, uncle Abe. I’m sorry, but I won’t agree to just be on the road indefinitely.” Aurora crosses her arms, and even though technically she isn’t a Brooks’ her attitude is just as bad.

Probably because Abe raised her after her father supposedly died.

“INCOMING VEHICLE.” ARIA chimes in, and I stand along with Chaos, Pinky, and Eagle.

We all draw our weapons as we head for the front door. I glance at the TV screen behind the bar before opening the front door and see Dee holding her shotgun at a cream-colored sedan. The United States Geological Survey logo is on the door, but she can’t see it from her angle.

“It’s Manny,” I say, putting my Glock away.

I step outside just as he’s getting out of the car, and Dee lowers her weapon to point at the ground.

Dr. Emmanuel Dawson helped save her a few weeks ago but why he’s here now is a complete mystery. I’m flanked by members who are curious to hear the reason, too, since we don’t make a habit of needing a guy who made a career out of having pet rocks.

“Thank you for the information, but you could have sent an email.” I hear Dee telling Manny when I get closer.

“What you thank him for, woman?” Abe’s voice comes from my left, and he hustles past me to get to his wife.

“He recovered my badge while doing a survey of the mine before they collapsed it. He figured I’d want it back. Guess he doesn’t think much of the postal system.” Dee holds up the five-point star medallion encased in a circle with the words US MARSHAL written inside it.

“No, ma’am, not with that. Didn’t expect such a warm welcome.” He lifts his chin, and I turn to see Satan with his arms crossed over his chest, glaring at us.

What happens next takes us all by surprise. Dee’s wolf dog starts growling at what seems like air, and then a slight buzzing sound starts. His growl turns to a whine, and before we know what’s happening, a headache like I’ve never experienced hits me.

I cover my ears, but the pain is so bad I drop to my knees. I try to keep my eyes open, but it’s practically impossible. I get glimpses of everyone in the same positions, then flashes of people running past us dressed in black.

The last thing I see is Manny running past us into the clubhouse with the shotgun Dee had moments ago. Then my world goes black.

“Easy Karma, take it slow. Everyone is ok.” My ears are ringing, and Doc’s voice sounds distorted like I’m hearing it through water.

“What happened?” I shake my head, trying to orient myself.

My eyes open slowly, and I see almost the whole club in various states of dismay. I sit up too quickly, and a wave of nausea crashes into me, and I reach blindly for anything to vomit into.

“Here,” Doc shoves a basin in my face just in time.

“Told you to take it easy. Once, just fucking ONCE, I wish you’d all listen to me.” I’m too busy getting sick to tell him to fuck off.

Once I get my stomach under control, I stand slowly and take stock of who’s still down. Doc is busy with Satan, Pinky is still passed out, Chaos is puking, and Eagle is talking to Manny.
