My heart stopped. My throat tightened. Bear screamed, racing to the surface.

"Yuri!" Kai yelled, her voice echoing through the chapel as Nox rose to his full height and turned his murderous gaze on me.

"Stop the wedding."

Yuri

It waslike one of those drug movies where all the parties involved have a gun to each other's heads.

Literally, in this case. A mechanical clicking came from behind me. I whipped my head around. Yegor stared, slack jawed, his personal guard beside him, their weapons drawn. They scanned the scene from one to the other with growing uncertainty.

"I propose an exchange." Nox's voice snapped me back. My field of vision tinted scarlet at the edges. Bear roared and I felt the shift coming over me, a volcano raging to the surface, ready to destroy everything in its way.

Kai glared at me, shaking her head imperceptibly.

Bear paused, confused.

"What's the meaning of this?" bellowed Yegor behind me, but Nox ignored him, beady eyes fixed firmly on me.

"What kind of exchange?" I asked.

"Your bride in exchange for mine."

My eyes widened.

"What?" Yegor shrieked but he was drowned out again, this time by Anastasia rushing past me.

"Nox, don't!"

It took me a moment to get this. Anastasia sank to the floor in her marshmallow dress, imploringly gazing up at the gigantic bird. The raven shifter's gaze softened.

"I cant stand by and watch you being used by your family any longer," Nox said quietly, ignoring the king's guards unlocking their weapons. "You deserve better, Sunshine."

I blinked. Sunshine? Apparently a private little soap opera had taken place between the two of them that had escaped even Yegor's notice.

Kai still hung in the shifter's claw like a prize, holding on convulsively, shooting me another look clearly instructing me to just shut up now.

And that's when I noticed the gun in her hand.

"Come with me," Nox said to Anastasia, even more hoarsely than before. "Give us a chance."

"Stop this farce immediately!" barked Yegor behind me, but no one listened to him, and his guards also seemed unsure of what to do. They stood frozen in shock.

"Now!" cried Kai. And before I could even blink, Nox flung her at me.

Kai

Things went sideways right away.

It hadn't really been a plan. Not that Nox and I, on our way through the icy night over Helsinki, had had any time to coordinate. My job had taught me to just roll along when necessary. So that’s what I did.

Plan of attack: Being thrown through the air. In flight, aim at Yegor's knee and left shoulder. Shoot. Hit. Neutralize. Somehow get to my feet.

Save Yuri.

However, in previous missions, my hand had never gone numb from the cold.

The gun slipped from my fingers mid- air. And I crashed into the pews. The impact drove the air from my lungs.
