He pulled her hair back from her neck to reveal the smooth column of her throat. Felix’s silver eyes were glazed with lust. Bringing his head down, he nuzzled her neck, pressing a kiss at the most sensitive spot, making her toes curl. Sharp teeth lightly scored the bottom of her neck before kissing it again. Rapture shot straight to the damp, throbbing spot between her legs. He suckled the spot where his teeth had been before biting down gently. Her hips bucked. Pleasure swirled through her veins. He was fanning the flames of desire, and she wanted to burn.
“God…” Burying her fingers into his hair, she pulled his face closer.
Flicks of his tongue soothed the bite, bringing her even greater pleasure.
This wasn’t like her fantasy at all. It was better.
Her arms snaked around him, pulling him closer like he was her anchor in this storm. He kissed a trail up her neck, intensifying all that she was feeling.
This was a kiss that made her forget everything. That made her drown in ecstasy, feeling a sense of connection she’d never felt before. She held onto his shoulder, losing herself in his ministrations.
“Sqeeaaak.”
Amara groaned at the distant sound. Felix kissed a trail up her jaw. He heard it too, but didn’t stop.
Was it a mouse? A creaking window? She didn’t care. She wanted his lips on her skin, making her go mad.
“Squeak.”
There it was again.
This time, it was followed by voices. At once, Felix pulled back. The hum of conversation grew louder outside the office door. Someone was here.
Amara quickly moved away, checking her clothing. When she glanced up, she saw Felix’s untucked shirt, his wet lips, and tousled gray hair. His eyes blazed an unholy shade of red.
“There’s light in Felix’s office.” The voices moved nearer.
Felix fumbled to locate the hem of his shirt but Amara got there first, tucking it in before someone came in. She patted his hair down, and said, “Try to look like you haven’t been thoroughly kissed.”
He blushed, but the color of his eyes didn’t change.
“Amara, I—” Just as he slipped behind his desk, a knock resounded.
“Yes?”
A spy opened the door, his eyes immediately going to Amara who had her face down, trying to hide any traces of their late-night rendezvous.
“I should get going,” she said in a thick voice. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
With that, she fled, her head low.

Duality was beautiful at night. Constructed in the style of an ancient Japanese house, it was an oasis in the middle of Inferno City. Colorful koi fish swam in the pond outside the main door. As Felix stepped over the red bridge leading to the lit-up entrance, memories of last night’s kiss filled his mind. He hadn’t spoken to Amara since. All morning, he’d contemplated apologizing to her. He’d even gone as far as buying her flowers but got rid of them in the end.
Felix didn’t know what he was supposed to say to her.
I’m sorry.
I made a mistake.
I want you, but I can’t have you.
His head manufactured lie after lie. Crisp summer air caressed his hair. He knew the right thing to do would be to apologize for his unprofessional conduct. No matter how strongly he was attracted to her, taking advantage of an employee in the office was against his code of ethics. He’d avoided any entanglements at work for decades. But she was different. She made him feel things he’d never felt before. Their kiss sparked to life a part of him that he believed had died. Perhaps a part that had never even existed — passion. Felix had always thought himself the considerable, gentle type. That’s how it had been with his wife. But last night’s kiss burned in his blood. It shattered every illusion he had about himself. He craved her like an addict craved lag. After the kiss was over, he was left reeling, wondering what else he’d discover if he dared to go deeper. Was it just a reaction to intimacy after years of celibacy or was it her? Felix was afraid he knew the answer. He wanted to get entangled with her, though it was so wrong. Which was why this was so complicated.
A red lantern flickered to life at the entrance, a sign that another female courtesan had become available. The pink and red lantern indicated the number of male and female escorts who were unoccupied. With its cooling pond, bamboo shoots, and neutral-toned walls, Duality was the premier pleasure house in Inferno City and had been so for years.
