He made it sound like a certainty, but I was sceptical that he’d ever get on a plane. ‘When are you planning to do this?’
‘I’ve got a ticket booked for tomorrow.’
‘What? You can’t have.’
‘I do. I’ll send you a photo. Wait a sec.’
My phone beeped. A photo of a ticket bearing his name popped into view.
‘That’s stupid, Terry. I’m not going back with you. You’re wasting your money.’

I sat, too angry to go back to sleep now.
Chapter 25
NEXT MORNING, RACHEL phoned me before I left for work. ‘Looks like your house sale might go through. The buyers are waiting for the final word from their bank for the finance, but they’re confident.’
‘Thanks, Rach. Terry phoned and woke me in the middle of the night to tell me about it.’
‘How inconsiderate of him.’
‘Sure was. And he said he’s flying over here.’
‘Shit. You don’t have to see him if you don’t want to, Heather. Remember what we talked about.’
‘Okay, thanks. How are you doing?’
‘I’m good,’ she said. ‘As usual, super busy with work. I miss you and our catch-ups. How long are you staying in the UK?’
‘I don’t know yet. I’ve organised daily care for Aunt Ruth and some work on the house. She’s in a good state of mind, considering what happened to her, but I want to stay longer to make sure she’s okay. Weeks, maybe months.’
