She sighs. “It’s really too bad Jaxon couldn’t make it tonight.”

“I agree. I’ve never met anyone more invested in work.”

“Ah, yes. He’s been that way for many years.”

“Has he?”

She nods, perusing the menu. “He has, especially after he graduated from college and started his first business.”

“Jaxon Enterprises,” I guess.

“Yes. He moved to Chicago and we hardly ever saw him. He’s extremely business oriented. His father’s the same way.”

“What does he do?” I ask.

“He works at a law firm as an attorney.”

“Wow. That’s incredible.”

“Yes, although, it surely does take up a lot of his time.” She chuckles. “We had first met while he was in law school. I honestly don’t know how he did it. Nursing school was hard enough, but becoming a lawyer,” she murmurs, shaking her head. “I could never.”

“Me, either.”

We laugh, and our waiter returns with our drinks.

“Ready to order?” he formally asks.

“Oh, jeez. We’ve been talking up a storm,” Lucy replies. “Can we please have a few more minutes?”

“Certainly.”

And he dismisses himself from the table.

“Can I ask you something, Sasha?”

Meeting her careful eyes, I’m struck with nerves. “Of course.”

“How did the two of you meet?”

Thank God.

“At a café,” I answer, relieved we had come up with a cliché backstory in advance. “I had accidentally left my wallet at home and was almost turned away, until Jaxon offered to pay.”

She happily grins, sipping her wine.

“We ended up sitting with one another, and we talked for over an hour.”

“How sweet,” she encourages, smiling. “Which café?”

I flinch.Shit.Fortunately, I think fast.

“Nellie’s Café, in downtown New York.”

“Sounds very quaint. Is that where you lived at the time?”

“Yes.” I anxiously sip my beer. “Born and raised.”

She nods. “Do your parents still live there?”
