“Jesus, how did we let this get so out of control?” she asked the agent, who was part of her security detail.

“I don’t know, Ms. Jordan. I just know that it’s a mess, and Matilda Provost is responsible.”

“Where is she?”

“Her team said that she was leaving the country. That’s all we know.”

“That’s fine,” nodded Sadie. “We need her gone so we can fix this mess.”

Agent Davis Myer was handsome. Beyond handsome. He had suave good looks and charm to match. There were long days and nights of working with the government and religious leaders of Micronesia, and he was always by her side, always ensuring she ate, slept, and was protected.

“It’s getting late, Sadie. Let me take you back to the hotel,” he said, standing and cracking his back.

“Gladly. This is gonna take at least a few more months to straighten out, and that’s assuming that everyone here will continue to cooperate.”

When they reached the hotel, they decided to grab a late dinner. When they finished dinner, they had a cocktail. And when he walked her to her room, Sadie fell into his arms and into his bed.

For the next several months, it was the same routine over and over again. Davis was always by her side, always either in her bed or they were in his bed. He was the first man that Sadie could actually picture herself sharing a life with.

With only a few weeks left in the country, she was ready to get home and hopefully start that life with Davis. The night before, he’d cancelled their dinner plans, claiming he didn’t feel well. Today, he’d asked her to meet him in the lobby before they started their day, so she showered and went down first. She was anxious to give him some very exciting news.

Waiting in the lobby for him to come down, she was surprised to see former Ambassador Provost. She didn’t say anything to her, but the other woman stared at her as she walked past her, brushing her sleeve with her hand.

Sadie felt a wave of nausea but thought nothing of it. Hearing the elevator doors open, she turned, smiling at Davis. Except he wasn’t alone. Coming behind him was a lovely woman about Sadie’s age. She had a baby in her arms and a little girl of about three holding her hand.

“Sadie,” said Davis, clearing his throat. “This is my wife, Corrine, and my daughter, Izzy. And this little man is Davis, Jr.” Sadie stared at him, then at the woman and children.

“It’s nice to meet you,” she said quietly, forcing a smile on her face. “I need to get to the office, Davis. Why don’t you spend the day with your family.”

“No, Sadie, it’s fine. They were going to do some sightseeing here before they go back in a few days.”

“It’s fine. You go with them,” she said, waving as she walked away. “Nice to meet you.”

Sadie couldn’t get out the doors fast enough. She waved for the car to pull up and then heard Davis at her back.

“Sadie? Please look at me.” She shook her head.

“You got what you wanted, Davis. You had your fling with me, and now you get to go home to your wife and kids.”

“Sadie, it’s not like that. I care for you. Really, I do. I was lonely and so were you. You can’t deny it.”

Turning to face him, she stood next to the car staring at him. A wave of anger and bitterness swept through her with such force, she thought she might actually spit venom.

“Go home, Davis. I’ll manage this without you. The rest of the team can handle the security detail. I honestly wished I’d never met you, then I wouldn’t be carrying your stupid baby.”

The moment she said it, Sadie felt the stab of guilt and pain in her abdomen. The look of horror on Davis’s face was enough to tell her what her words had done.

She got into the car and drove away, the whole time holding her stomach. When she got to the office, she immediately ran to the bathroom. When she was done vomiting, she sat on the toilet. As the water turned blood red, she knew that she had done this. She had willed her child to be aborted. She had done this.

And her family would hate her forever.

CHAPTER THREE

Ham watched as Sadie lit into her brothers as they walked toward the cafeteria. Her long blonde hair was whipping around her body almost as fast as her mouth was moving. Her long arms swung up and then sideways, her brothers ducking and bobbing, avoiding a direct hit.

The doors blew open with a rush of cold wind, and Patrick, Christopher, and Sadie walked in. There was no missing the fact that they were triplets. The boys were identical, with Sadie looking like the softer female version. All three had long blonde hair with hints of red inherited from their mother. They had enormous blue eyes and thick black lashes. All three were exceptionally tall, the boys six-feet-five. Sadie was five-feet-eleven, most of it legs.

The three stormed toward Luke, and he grinned, waiting for the inevitable fighting that would start. Although older than the triplets, he remembered them as little kids when he was in high school. Sadie had always been the more aggressive of the three, and times had definitely not changed.
