My plan to distract Dax hasn’t been working as well as I thought if for the past month he’s been working with someone to find them.

He gives me a passionate kiss before pulling me into a tight hug, and although I want to be excited for him, I’m slightly terrified.

On the one hand, his happiness is contagious and I’m happy he’s getting closer to finding his cousin, but in the same breath, if he finds him, then Carlo has no use for me and he’ll kick me to the dirt or straight back into the hands of Maxwell. As selfish as it sounds, I need to stop this from happening.

* * *

Carlo catchesme when I’m heading to the gym for one of my late-night sessions. I sneak past Dax’s room, like I do most nights when he’s not in mine, and creep my way through the house. But this time Carlo is waiting by the back door like he knew I’d be there. He probably did—the guards will have noticed my nocturnal habits and passed them along.

“Miss Shaw,” he says coldly and I stop in my tracks, knowing this isn’t going to be a pleasant chat. It never is with Carlo.

“Let’s cut the chit-chat, shall we.” He looks directly at me, a hard expression on his face. “What was Dax doing in my study?”

I keep a calm exterior on the outside, but inside I’m trembling.

“You forget this is my house. Apparently, he does too. I have cameras. Obviously.”

It makes total sense, but why neither of us thought of it I have no idea.

“I don’t know,” I lie.

“Don’t lie to me, little girl.”

I take a deep breath and fist my hands behind my back so he doesn’t see me shaking.

“I asked him. He didn’t tell me,” I lie again, hoping that by showing him I was willing to find out he’d cut me some slack.

“I don’t believe you.”

“I asked him. He slammed a drawer in frustration. Whatever he was looking for, he obviously couldn’t find. I asked him and he said nothing. He wouldn’t tell me.”

I’ve been lying my whole life. And I’ve always found when you add a little bit of truth into something, it’s a little more believable.

“I’m going to find out, girl.” He steps closer to me and sneers. “Has he mentioned King recently?”

I keep myself composed on the outside.

“No.”

He watches me closely and it takes everything in me not to falter. If I say yes, he’ll punish me for not distracting him hard enough and he’ll punish Dax for looking. If I say no, we both get out of this. Hopefully.

“Good. Keep doing whatever the fuck you’re doing, Aurora.”

He steps behind me and heads in the opposite direction and instead of heading to the gym alone tonight, I bolt back upstairs.

But this time I go into Dax’s room.

Ican’t decide if I should creep in or just be completely mundane about it and act like this is normal. But it turns out I don't have to make either choice, because as soon as I open the door, I hear a low grunt and over on the bed, Dax is leaning against his headboard, completely naked, with his dick in his hand.

“Oh fuck!” he half moans, half shouts as he starts to come in his hand, over his chest, all the while trying to get up and cover himself. If I wasn’t so mortified, I’d laugh.

“Rori, fuck!” Dax says again, a little more composed as he throws on a pair of boxers and rubs his stomach clean with a T-shirt.

I want to run, but my feet are also glued to the floor and to be honest with you, I have no idea what to make of what I just saw.

I’ve heard Dax through the wall before and it stirred something up in my belly. But seeing it. Seeing him. To say I’m confused but also completely aroused is one thing.

“Rori, I’m so sorry. I had no idea you would walk in.”
