An icy chill runs down my spine. If that isn’t an eerie message, I don’t know what is.

She shakes her head. “I’ve been going crazy trying to figure it out myself. I have no idea. Lissa wants me to report it.”

I nod, agreeing. “I think you should.”

She lets out a sigh. “I told Lissa I would if it happens again.”

I don’t like this. If it happens again? Why let it get to that? Someone had obviously been following her. Watching her. But who? She’s only been staying with her sister for a few months, and it’s not like she really goes anywhere alone besides maybe to the store or things like that.

“I’d rather you be safe than sorry. I wish you’d go now.”

Her lips curl into the tiniest smile. “I promise I will. I’ll be fine.”

I tilt my head. I can’t imagine anything happening to her. But I also know she’s a grown ass woman and I can’t force her to do anything. “I hope so.”

She chuckles softly. “I will.” She leans over and places a kiss on my cheek.

I let out a deep breath and check the time on the car radio. It’s time for me to get back. “I’ve got to run back in.” I slam my head against the headrest of my seat, scrutinizing Serenity. She’s so precious to me. I have to keep her safe. I have to.

“I know,” she frowns. “Call me when you go on break again.”

I nod. “Let me know when you get home, okay?”

She smiles once more. “Of course I will.”

I lean over and kiss her goodbye, and as I get out of the car, a creepy feeling washes over me. I don’t like this one bit.

I walk over to her side of the car so I can talk to her before she pulls out of the parking spot. She rolls down the window and I place my hands on the door.

I search her eyes. “Text me. No, better yet, call me when you get home, okay?”

“I promise.”

I lean closer and she meets me halfway as our lips lock and we say goodbye one more time.
