Mia stopped beside me, her small snout pushing against my closed eyes.
“Mommy, are you okay? Mommy, say something.”
Playfully, I snapped at her and picked her up by the scruff with my teeth. I love Soren with all that I am, but I never believed I could love anyone the way I loved my baby.
“Are we done playing, Mommy?”
“Yes, we’ll go back now. We must spend time in human shape, too, and you have homework.”
“Nooo. I want to hunt like I did with Dad and Uncle Will yesterday.”
“Tomorrow, baby. Today we play human.”
A roar filled the valley, and a huge white wolf jumped in front of us.
“But first, pay the road tax.”
Mia started to wiggle in my grip. I released her. She ran toward Soren, who nuzzled her.
“Here are my beautiful girls.”
“We played hunt, and I almost caught the rabbit. I caught Mommy twice because she’s slow.”
Mia kept telling Soren about all the adventures we had. It made my heart sore with joy.
Soren nuzzled me and gave me that nose bop that became our wolf equivalent of a kiss.
