Chapter Twenty-Two

Easy

“Good morning.”

I looked around the common room, and then at Birdie’s friend, Layla. “Uh, hello?”

“Don’t look so confused,” she laughed. “I spent the night in Snapper’s room.”

It was Saturday morning, a week after I started to drive, and I had wandered out to the kitchen to get coffee for Birdie while she was in the shower. She had to be to work in an hour, and I had plans to help her wash her back yet.

“I take it you and Snapper are doing well, then,” I mused.

Layla smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear. “I would say that, yes.” She set her empty cup in the sink and grabbed her bag off the counter. “Snapper does sleep like the dead, though,” she laughed. “I tried to tell him I needed to get to work, but he didn’t budge.”

“I’ll let him know when he wakes up.” Which probably wouldn’t be for a couple of hours.

“I left him a note and a text. Hopefully, he’ll see those.” She hitched her bag over her shoulder and waved. “Later, Easy.”

I filled two cups of coffee and headed back to my room.

“Doc,” I called as I shut the door behind me. “You are not going to believe who I just saw while I was getting coffee.”

“Who?” she called.

I walked into the bathroom and set her coffee on the sink. “Layla.”

The shower curtain whooshed back, and Birdie’s mouth hung open. “Shut up.”

I leaned against the sink and crossed my ankles. “Swear to god, Doc. She was drinking a cup of coffee and then took off for work.”

Birdie looked me up and down and frowned. “You went out there like that?” she asked.

I looked down at my bare chest and sweatpants. “At least I put pants on, Doc. I wasn’t expecting to see your friend.”

“I guess I should be thankful you weren’t out there in your underwear.”

“True,” I laughed. “I’ll have to just do that at your place.”

She nodded. “Good plan.”

The water cascaded down her body, and my dick twitched. “You need your back washed?”

She turned her back to me and glanced over her shoulder. “What do you think?”

I set my coffee on the sink next to hers and dropped my pants to the floor. “I think you might be late to work, Doc.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

Birdie

“Birdie.”

My heart jumped and I froze.

No.

This was not happening.
