“Nice, bro. You’re getting your vision back and some one-on-one time with the doc.”

I raised my middle finger at him. “Have you heard of fucking knocking?”

“Your mom told me to just come in. I’m your ride once you bust out of here,” he explained.

“Uh, I need to get back to the ER,” Birdie mumbled.

“Making out on the clock,” Hero laughed. “Fucking nice.”

I couldn’t see Birdie’s face, but I knew she was embarrassed and probably ten shades of red. “You got shit timing, brother,” I growled.

“Uh, I’ll talk to you later, Easy,” Birdie called. She slipped out of the room before I could say another word.

“Bro,” Hero cheered. “How the hell did you manage to land her?”

“I didn’t land her,” I grumbled.

“Uh, yeah, you did. At least, from what I saw you did.” He moved over to the chair Birdie had bumped into and flopped into it. “Can you see me? How many fingers am I holding up?”

I could see that he had his hand held out to me, but I couldn’t make out how many fingers. “You’re a dick, bro. I can only imagine all of you guys are going to be holding up your fingers for me to guess how many you are holding up.”

“Come on,” he teased. “Just take a guess.”

“One,” I growled.

“You are right. And it was my middle finger.”

“Dick,” I laughed.

“Would you really expect anything less from me?” He kicked up his feet on the edge of the bed and grabbed the remote to the TV. “You wanna talk about her?”

“With you?” I scoffed.

“Hey,” Hero laughed. “You must have forgotten, but I’ve been with Reva for a while now. I know what you’re going through.”

“And just what is that?” I asked. As if Hero knew what the hell I was thinking and going through.

“You’re trying to figure out where the hell she came from and why it’s taken you forever to find her, but you don’t want to focus too much on that because now you’re afraid she’s going to run away.”

I mean, he wasn’t wrong. “And your dumbass barging in on us didn’t fucking help.”

“Don’t worry about that,” Hero laughed. “She was embarrassed I walked in, not embarrassed that it had been you she was kissing.”

“I wouldn’t fucking know because she backed away from me, I couldn’t see her face.” I was going to kick Hero’s ass if he had scared off Birdie.

“Trust me.” He flipped the channels on the TV until he landed on something that sounded like a talk show. “What’s it like being blind?” he asked.

“Fucking sucks,” I grunted. “Makes me appreciate shit a hell of a lot more than I did before.”

“I bet,” Hero mumbled.

I laid back in my bed and rest my arm above my head. “You have the worst fucking timing,” I repeated.

“Calm down,” Hero muttered. “This chick has got you in knots if you’re stressing this much over her.”

“She’s different.”

Hero turned his head to me. “They always are, brother. They always are.”
