Not tonight.

I didn’t have it in me.

Hell, I didn’t know if I would ever have it in me.

I just wanted to get away from him, and it didn’t matter how.

“Excuse me,” I asked meekly.

“Have a good night, Birdie,” he replied smoothly as he stepped to the side.

I jumped out of the elevator like it was on fire and didn’t stop walking until I was at Easy’s door.

Why?

Why did this have to happen to me?

“Birdie?” Easy called. His senses really had heightened since he couldn’t see.

I needed to calm down and get a hold of myself.

I did not need to walk into Easy’s room and have a breakdown. We were celebrating him not having cancer, and not going to think about the fact that my crazy ex was back.

That could wait until I was home and by myself.

Aaron Gibbs was my problem, and I would handle it.

I pushed open his door and closed it gently behind me. “Hey,” I called.

“I was wondering if you were going to blow me off.”

I moved to the side of the bed and sat on the edge of the chair. “I had to change and then take the long ride up the elevator.”

He smiled, and his eyes looked directly at me. It was like he could see me.

“How are you doing?” I asked. I moved my head, and his eyes followed me. “Can you see me?” I asked.

“I can see the shape of you.”

My mouth dropped open, and I blinked rapidly. “Excuse me, what?” I gasped.

He shrugged and threw up his hands. “I’m just as shocked as you are. I closed my eyes to rest until you got here, and when I heard you on the other side of the door, I opened my eyes.”

“And you could see,” I whispered.

“It’s still blurry as fuck, but it’s not just black.”

I knew Easy’s vision was going to come back. I didn’t think it would be this soon, but I could tell that he was a fighter. “We need to call the nurse and let her know, Easy. This is amazing news. You found out the tumor was benign and now you can see.”

“You think we can wait until after we eat dinner?”

I flattened my lips and shook my head. “You can see, and you don’t want to shout it from the rooftops?” I laughed.

“It’s blurry as fuck, Doc. It’s not like I’ve got 20/20 vision.” He pointed to the table by his head. “Meg brought dinner a couple of hours ago.”

“I would be insulted that you are going to serve me a cold dinner, but I know with it even being cold, it’s going to be amazing since Meg made it.” I reached for the cooler on the table and set it in my lap.

“It’s not cold. She put it in there hot, so the cooler is keeping it warm.”
