He laughed. “Totally worth it.”

It was definitely worth the wait.

JOSH PLAYED WITH MY RING as he held my hand. We were traipsing through the middle of a field. The only light was from a few nearby homes. More like country manors. I hoped no one called the authorities on us. Josh promised me we weren’t trespassing. It wasn’t the romantic date I had envisioned for Valentine’s Day, but Josh said to trust him.

“I still can’t believe you asked me to marry you on the podcast.” I leaned into him, freezing.

“It was pure genius. I got to surprise you, and your BFFs got to be a part of it.”

“The traitors,” I laughed.

“Admit it—you secretly loved it.”

I shivered from the cold. “All I can say is, I love you.”

Josh chuckled and kissed my head. “You said yes, so let’s call it a win.”

I waved my free hand around. “So, what are we calling this?”

Josh paused and looked around the open field of tall dead grass surrounded by rolling hills before searching my eyes. “Our future.”

I tipped my head to the side. “Our future?” I questioned.

He ran an icy finger down my cheek. “I’ve been doing a little more than negotiating with Mikey while I’ve been here. I’ve been looking at land, too, and talking to an architect.”

“Wow,” I spoke as a breath, seeing where this was going.

“This could all be ours.”

I looked at the gorgeous and expensive nearby homes, each one on large plots like the one we were standing on. In my wildest dreams growing up, I never imagined living in such a place. Even less with such a man as Josh. Someone who loved me fully and completely, despite my quirks. Granted, I saw plenty of tiffs in our future. As long as we made up each time, that’s all I cared about. “How much would all this cost?”

“We can afford it.”

“You mean you can.”

He drew me close and wrapped me in his arms. “No. I mean we.”

I snuggled into him, soaking in the warmth of him and his words. “I should probably take on some more clients.”

He laughed and stroked my hair. “If that’s what you want, but it’s unnecessary. I’ve been smart with our money. And we will continue to be. We can meet with the realtor and architect tomorrow if you’d like.”

“You have been busy.”

“Nat, I’ve been planning our future from the first moment I saw you.”

I clung tighter to him, wondering how I ever got so lucky. “I suppose we better work on those plans, then. You know I love a good plan.”

“I know that about you.” He leaned back with an impish glint in his eye. “I was wondering if perhaps we could move up some of your plans.”

“Which ones are those?”

“How dead set are you on getting married on September thirtieth?”

“Well …,” I exaggerated. “I already scheduled it on my calendar. You know how I feel about that.”

His lips twitched before he went in for the kill, meaning his warm lips landed on my neck. Did he ever know how to nuzzle a neck … and get his way. He started with soft kisses before he ravaged my skin. Between his blissful assault, he whispered, “I’m more than tired of living away from you. And like I said earlier, we are way behind schedule. I think we need to remedy that. Like as soon as possible.”

I tipped my head back to give him more playing room. “How soon are we talking?”
