He kisses me on the forehead. “I knowthat too.”
“So…” I grab the lapels of his jacket, tugging him closer. “This is a social visit?”
“Oh, baby…” Cole covers his mouth withmine, his tongue sliding into my mouth. I hum my approval and start walking himbackwards toward the bedroom. “Oh baby, we can’t.”
“What’s going on?”
“We heard from Rafael Mezzo thismorning.”
“Oh…” I’m almost afraid to ask what hashappened.
“He would like to meet with us at two.”
“Okay, what did he say?”
“What he said he’d do. He has an offer ofa contract to do business with Lawton.”
I release the breath I’ve been holding.“That’s great, but that doesn’t explain why you’re home.” I cock an eyebrow.
“Vincenzo Mezzo is heading up the meetingand has requested that you be there.”
“Uh—well, um.” I mentally cringe. I don’twant to deal with this business anymore. That’s Cole’s job. I want a job whereI look at pretty antiques all day and find out their histories and appraisethem for thousands of dollars.
Cole rubs the wrinkles away from myforehead. “And this is why I’m here. I knew if I called you, you’d hum and haover it, and make some excuse not to come to the meeting. Especially after howthe last meeting you attended went.”
“Oh, you mean how you hauled me into theconference room and we had sex on the table? That was a good meeting.”
Cole laughs. “I’m glad you remember theimportant stuff. Why don’t you go get ready and I will make us lunch.”
I start to walk back to the bedroom, but thenstop turning around. “Did you say make?”
“I close million dollar deals on a dailybasis, babe. I can slap two slices of bread and a piece of meat together tomake a sandwich.”
“Well then, I better hurry. I need to seethis.”
I find myself standing in front of thecloset once again, not knowing what to wear. I really miss my old clothes thatare hanging in a closet in Idaho. Do I try to look like a businesswoman again,or dress casually, or, or what? I do not know. I find a pair of gray slacks, but I’m just not feeling it. I pull down a navy-blue cotton A line dress withwhite trim around the waist and then find a white cardigan to wear. The safe isopen, so I pull out my round diamond earrings and necklace. I leave my hairdown and put a few curls in it.
Last but certainly not least, and becauseI have grown kind of partial to them, my nude Jimmy Choos.
“Kate, did you get lost in here again?”Cole’s handsome frame blocks the closet entrance.
“You forgot to draw me a map,” I say, slipping my shoes on. “Will this be okay?”
Cole walks into the closet, pulling me tohim. “You are beautiful in whatever you wear.”
“Oh well, in that case, I think I have apotato sack around here somewhere.” I pretend to look around. “It’s designer,of course.”
“Nothing less than the best for myCookie.” He gives me a quick kiss. “Lunch is ready.”
In the kitchen, Cole has even gone as farto set two plates on the counter. I sit down and he places a container of mixedraw vegetables and then a turkey sandwich on my plate. “Wow, you never cease toamaze me, Coulter Holt.”
“Didn’t you know?” He gives me aquestioning look.
“Know what?”
“That’s my goal in life, to never ceaseamazing you.”
My cheeks blush and I can’t help thesilly grin that crosses my face. “Oh you.” I pick up my sandwich, taking abite. “Hey, this is pretty good.”
