I scrunch my eyebrows together, thinkingof Jill.

“What is it?” Kit gives me a cautiousglance. “Did I step on your toes?”

“No,” I laugh. “I introduced you to Jill, but you weren’t interested. What happened?”

His eyebrows knit together momentarily, but then he smiles. “Honestly?”

“Yes, honestly.”

“She’s smokin’ hot. Especially in thatlittle black dress she wore to the Triton Club, but I couldn’t handle the wayshe treated you. The whole, signing you up to sing, and the little cracks shemade throughout dinner.”

“I thought maybe you’d like that she’ssarcastic. She can be pretty witty, like you.”

“Yeah, but those cracks and jabs weredirected at a girl I wished was mine.”

My cheeks heat with embarrassment. Hecan’t be serious? I mean, I hadn’t even had a date in over a year before I metCole. “Oh, well…”

“Sorry, I don’t mean to embarrass you. Youhave a light about you, Kate. You make the most of life.”

“Thanks Kit. Can I ask you something?”

“Sure, Sugar anything.”

“What’s with all the weirdness? I mean Iguess that’s not the right word. It’s just, both Race and Cooper have said thesame thing to me. It’s nice and everything, but I’m beginning to wonder if Ihave a terminal illness I don’t know about.”

“Oh god, of course you’d have to ask me.I can’t tell you.”

I stop dancing. “No, not fair.” I’m sosick of not knowing what’s going on, I can feel the tears threatening behind meeyes.

“Oh shit, don’t cry. I don’t know how tohandle women who cry.”

“Then tell me,” I plead.

Kit blows out a breath. “We got anotherthreat this afternoon at the office.”

“I knew it.”

“Kate, don’t freak out, it’s nothingreally.”

“Why don’t I believe you?”

“What are you talking about? I have theface of an angel. It has truth and trustworthiness written all over it.”

“Oh, really?”

“Yes, just…you didn’t hear that from me.Everyone will have my head.”

“Your secret is safe with me,Christopher.”

The song ends and we meander off thedance floor. “Um,” I turn up towards the bar. “I’d like another glass of wine.”

“Anything you want, Kate.” Kit beams atme.

“In that case, I may need a shot to gowith the wine.” Kit shakes his head, leading me up to the bar.

He orders me another glass of wine. “Whatkind of shot do you want?”

“Um, I don’t know. What do you suggest?”
