The one thing I do know for certain?

I’m yours.

Irrevocably.

Forever.

Settle in and write me back, baby. I’ll be there at the first chance I get to hold you again.

I love you more than life. You’re my blackbird, but our girl.

CHAPTER 34

PHOENIX’S LETTER

Firecracker.

Happy six months inside!

That shouldn’t be something to celebrate, but after seeing the change in you recently, I’m inclined to think we should mark the occasion. Thanks for the origami paper crane you gave me last visitation. It hangs from the ceiling in our bedroom now. I’m still recovering from the shock of discovering you doing art therapy. Thanks for that heart attack.

The apartment back at Sabre is empty without you.

You should fucking be here.

I started my volunteer program last week. Took a few months to straighten it out given our newfound fame, but the rehab manager is a decent bloke. I’m going to be talking to the kids about gang-related crime and addiction, apparently. The two things I know better than drugs themselves. Ironic, huh?

I’m trying to right the wrong I’ve inflicted.

I need a new purpose in this world.

Eli got accepted to study remotely at King’s College, London. He was over the fucking moon, Brooke. I wish you could’ve seen his face. All those history essays of mine he wrote have paid off. The scholarship is pretty generous too. He’s talking as well. Little bits here and there. His new speech therapist is a fucking saint.

What else?

I haven’t seen Nana. She knows I love her, but I can’t go back there. I don’t want that life anymore. The day she steps down and retires properly, perhaps we can have a relationship again. Until then, this is the right thing to do for me.

Charlie’s grave is peaceful.

She’s beneath an apple tree.

Got another formal apology from the government for her death. They just keep on coming as more information leaks out. The case is still developing, even six months later. Each week there’s a new arrest. More evidence. Victims coming forward. Hunter, Theo and Enzo are still working around the clock to get that justice they promised Alyssa.

She would be proud of them, I think.

I’ll be there next week, firecracker. Until then, I’m enclosing a kiss in this letter.

Forever yours,

Nix

CHAPTER 35

KADE’S LETTER

Hi love,
