Holy fuck he was a lucky man.

“You don’t care that I was in prison?” he asked and even he could hear the shock in his voice.

“Well, no. I guess I don’t.”

“Why?” He was flabbergasted.

“Mark, you saved me from hell. Literally.” She frowned at him. “Not all women want a prince charming. Sometimes we need someone that can battle our demons.”

Her shoulders straight, and her head up high, he couldn’t have been prouder in that moment that she was his.

Beautiful little bird.

She wanted to ask so badly.

Really, she wanted to know. But after she had made that statement, there wasn’t a way for her to ask without it sounding like she was going back on it. She had meant every word.

That didn’t mean she wasn’t curious.

“So what was he in for?”

“Assault.”

She swallowed, glancing out the front of the window away from him, butterflies filling her stomach.

Mark going to prison didn’t worry her.

Having friends that went to prison, she could deal with that.

Assault, that worried her.

“Hey. Little bird look, at me.” She did as he asked, trying to keep the worry off her face.

“I promise I would never take you somewhere that you would feel unsafe okay?”

She nodded and leaned over, laying her head on his shoulder. “Will you tell me about it?”

“Me being in prison?”

“Yes,” she murmured, trying to stifle a yawn.

How was it that she was tired? It was only ten in the morning.
