“You’re my good, Mark.”

Fuck but her words gutted him.

He couldn’t get her words out of his head.

He pulled up to the hotel, the big building in front of him looming in the night sky.

Normally he wouldn’t be picky. Just any roadside motel would work for him. As long as it had a bed and a bathroom, he was happy.

His little bird deserved more than that.

“You’re my good, Mark.”

As long as he lived, he didn’t think he would ever forget her words or the way she had kissed his cheek so softly.

Like he mattered.

Fuck.

He glanced over to her sleeping form, slumped against the middle console and his shoulder. Her blond hair was reflecting the light from out the window, making her seem like she glowed.

She was so beautiful that sometimes he had to catch himself. He didn’t know what he had done before in a past life to deserve a chance with her, but he wasn’t going to question it.

“Hey,” he called softly, running his free hand over her head, moving her hair off of her face.

“Winter, baby. We are here.”

“Hmmm,” she murmured, stretching her arms out, her eyes slowly opening. The grey sparkling as she met his gaze.

“Hey, little bird. We’re here.”

“Where is here?” She sat up at that looking around.

“A hotel for the night,” he said getting out and heading around the truck to help her out.

He left his truck parked in the entrance and threw his arm around her, moving them inside. She leaned into him, her arm wrapped around him, as her head twisted from side to side looking at everything in the hotel.

It wasn’t the best that he had ever stayed at, but it was far from the worst either.

“Hello, how can I help you today?” the receptionist asked in a not very professional voice.

He was more than aware of the sultry tone the woman had added to it. But if his hearing hadn’t been good enough, the way that Winter froze, then leaned even farther into him would have been a dead giveaway.

He squeezed her shoulder in reassurance and turned back to the receptionist.
