All her life she had been told what to do.

What to say.

How to act.

Right up till she was sold.

Then she had literally had the rules beaten into her, till she was pushed so far down that she didn’t even remember who she was.

“Can you take me to Mark, please.” Her words came out even and calm, even through the rising fury that was filling her.

“Umm …” Alice said looking between her and Christine. As if Christine would jump into and save her.

“Now!” she said stronger and both the girls’ eyes widened.

She didn’t care if they didn’t think it was the right thing to do or not. She was not going to stand by and let Mark be berated for his decisions.

A decision that had saved her from the depths of hell.

She followed them down a hallway, her fear and nerves growing the farther she went. But this time she wasn’t going to let it stop her.

She wasn’t going to give in.

Because no matter what happened, she was free.

And it was all because of Mark.

Their shoes sounded down the long hallway as they approached a set of heavy double doors that were closed, a man standing in front of them.

They weren’t all the way down the hall before she could hear the shouting. So loud that she could hear it through the closed doors.

“Listen, Dominic, I don’t care what it is you think you have on her—”

“She could be a look out for them Mark! How can you not see that?” Dominic’s voice carried to them, and Alice flinched.

“Dominic, listen …” She heard Rick say.

“Fucking stay out of this Rick!” At Dominic’s words Christine’s back shot straight, as her eyes turned flinty.

“He doesn’t know what he’s getting into. Some pussy shows up and he just up and leaves for a year.”

That last hadherback going straight.

She marched right up to the doors and pushed them open.

Fuck knocking!
