“Mark.”

“A bit early for our weekly call,” he said, his eyes over his menu on Winter.

“Well this is an exception.”

“I told you before, I’m not willing to rush anything.”

Her head whipped up, her eyes flying to him, the grey in them sparkling. Just like always when she looked at him he felt himself cave just a little. It was almost as if he could feel himself bending, wrapping around her.

Eyes like that made men live on their knees.

“Yes I know. But you need to be here Mark. Especially now.”

Didn’t Dominic realize that she was the most important thing to him right now?

“Mark, it’s important,” Dominic muttered again, sounding irritated.

“Now? What is going on?” He sat up straighter. “Is everyone okay?”

“Christine’s pregnant.”

“Holy fuck! That’s awesome!” he said, relaxing back with a smile on his face.

“You need to wrap things up there, Mark. She wants you to come back.”

He was silent for a moment and Winter’s smile fell.

“Think on it.” Then Dominic hung up.

“What was that?” she asked.

“That was Dominic. Christine is pregnant.”

He had talked about Dominic and his family with her over the last year only in brief instances. She didn’t know a lot about him, but she knew the basics.

He wasn’t hiding from her. He just didn’t know what to say.

In a way the last year had been good for him as well. A chance to get away and realize what he wanted out of life.

Where he wanted to be.

And with who.

Her.

For as long as she would have him.

“That’s wonderful.” But her face said that she wasn’t happy.

She was worried.

“I suppose you will want to go home then.”

He didn’t want to push her, but she was right.

This changed things.

“When I left to try and find Ernesto, I was thankful for the chance. I’ve never been good with staying in one place, a product I suppose of my job taking me all over. But if this whole thing has shown me something it’s that Florida is my home. My family is there, and yes I’m looking forward to a day that I can go back.”
