“About what?”

I hesitated. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to you about what happened between you and Kyle Segrott the other day. When you assaulted him.”

He scowled. “Why would you wait until now?”

“Well, you heard what happened to him, I’m sure.”

“Of course. Everyone has.”

I shrugged. “He died very suddenly.”

“What the hell does that have to do with me?”

I exhaled. “It would be nice if you’d take it down a notch, Quinn. I’m simply here to talk.”

“Yeah?” He narrowed his eyes. “What are you so curious about?”

“I’m curious why you were so danged angry with him.”

He dropped his gaze. “I had my reasons.”

“How about you share them with me.”

“Why should I?”

I gave a hard laugh. “Because I asked you to.”

“I… I don’t have anything to say to you.” He shifted agitatedly, meeting my gaze. His expression was cold, his eyes hard.

“Why are you so confrontational with me, Quinn?” I was truly mystified by the man in front of me. We’d never butted heads before, so why was he looking at me like I was his enemy?

“It just seems a little weird to me that Kyle dies suddenly, and you show up asking questions,” he mumbled. “Almost like you think maybe I had something to do with it.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“I’m putting two and two together all by myself, Sheriff.”

“You’re jumping to conclusions.”

“Am I?” He chuffed. “So, you would have come to talk to me even if Kyle hadn’t died?”

I sighed. “Possibly. You assaulted Kyle right in front of me. I don’t think having a conversation about what happened should surprise you.”

“I don’t buy it.”

“You don’t buy what?”

“That you’re just here about the run-in I had with Kyle the other day.”

He was so defensive; the conversation was going nowhere fast. My subtlety was wasted on him. “Look, I’ll just cut to the chase.”

“Please do,” he rumbled.

“Kyle’s brother swears there’s no way Kyle accidentally died of anaphylactic shock.”

A red flush crept up his fleshy cheeks. “Meaning what?”

“Meaning I feel obligated to talk to anyone who had a problem with Kyle before his death. You’re one of those people, Quinn.”
