He was wrong.
His expression was way too threatening. I had no idea why he was looking at me like he wanted to strangle me, but it was the truth. I wasn’t going to let him get near me if I had anything to say about it. “Mr. Raiden, why are you so aggressive seeming? I have no idea why you’re so angry.”
“Don’t play dumb,” he rasped, lunging at me.
I skittered away, panic rising inside of me. “What in the world is going on?” I asked. “Why are you mad at me? I’m simply here doing my job.”
He laughed. “Sure. Sure. It’s not like you’re trying to get Angela to throw me under the bus or anything, right? I’m sure you didn’t come here at Sheriff Callum’s suggestion, to talk my wife into turning on me.”
I frowned. “I’m sorry?”
“Don’t pretend you don’t know exactly what’s going on here. The cats out of the bag, Doc.” He tried another lunging movement.
I jumped away, avoiding his grasping hands. “You have me at a loss, Mr. Raiden. I made a house call, that’s all that is happening here.” I eyed the doorway. “Why don’t I just leave, and you two can hash out your marital problems without me here?”
His laugh was harsh. “I don’t think so.”
“But, whatever this is, it doesn’t concern me,” I said breathlessly, still eyeing the doorway.
“It does now, asshole.” He sneered. “You stuck your nose in where it doesn’t belong. I didn’t come this far to let you and yoursignificant otherbring me down.”
I squinted at him, bewildered. “What are you talking about? Is this about the recall election?”
“There’s no way you’re this dumb.” Michael scowled.
Angela hissed, “Michael, you’re misunderstanding what’s happening here. Dr. Thornton doesn’t knowanything. You’re making things worse. I didn’t tell him a damn thing.”
“Pfft. You’re not exactly known for your discretion, sweetheart,” he jeered.
Her cheeks pinked. “You should talk.”
“At least I don’t spill my guts to anyone who’ll listen.”
She snapped, “You act like you’re such a virtuous man. Such an honorable man. After all the horrible things you’ve done, how can you evenpretend?”
“Shut up, Angela,” he grated.
“Why? According to you he already knows everything.”
He hesitated, and then growled, “Either way, just shut up.”
“I won’t. I’m sick of it. I’m sick of you.”
He curled his lip. “Is that right? Is that why you spread your legs for Liam? Oh, wait, you spread your legs for anyone who gives you even a shred of attention.”
“Asshole.” She shuddered. “Liam was a better man than you’ll ever be. He was everything, and you took him away from me. I’ll never forgive you. Never.”
“I don’t care about your forgiveness. Just keep your mouth shut.”
“I won’t,” she snapped. “I won’t, and you can’t make me. I hope Dr. Thornton does know everything. The world needs to know what a monster you are.”
“Say one more word and maybe you can join Liam,” he roared.
She screeched, “Fine. Do it. I’d rather be dead than live one second longer with you.”
I was frozen in place, watching them escalate. I didn’t dare open my mouth in case I drew Michael’s attention again. But this argument was going to end horribly if they didn’t calm down. And neither one of them gave any indication they were going to calm down one bit.
“I’m warning you, woman, keep your mouthshut.” His face quivered with rage.
