Cass leaned forward, trying to get a better look. She could barely move because she was still trapped in the tangled bra and blouse, not to mention her skirt pulled up around her waist. She didn’t dare try to put her clothes back on properly, not with those two sitting so close.
Can they smell me? Fuck, I hope not.
She was pretty sure if they noticed any smell at all, it would more than likely be Flash. It was very likely that their overconfidence meant they simply weren’t paying attention.
"It was a good idea," Edwards said. “Perfect way to get everyone involved.”
“No one can resist free money,” Crenshaw said, a satisfying note to his voice. “Everyone wants something for nothing.”
“Even you?”
“Don’t be funny. It just makes you look pathetic.”
“Fuck you. Hurry up.”
“Emailing it to Jenkins now.”
“Let’s get out of here. All this remodeling shit is giving me a headache.”
“Agreed,” Crenshaw said. Even though Edwards got up, Crenshaw took a minute to go through the desk drawer, pulling out a thick cigar and lighting it with a match. Cass sighed with relief. It would make it almost impossible for both of them to smell her, even if she was dripping with lust. She didn’t know what kind of powers these guys possessed ... she assumed they weren’t ordinary humans ... but if a cigar could mess up Slade’s sense of smell, it could do it to anyone.
Cass watched the men as they headed for the door. She sensed a thick, dark aura over one or both of them. It unsettled her because the demon presence had to be incredibly strong for it to be so foreboding.
And completely evil.
She watched them leave the office, wishing she could tail them and fully investigate the demonic presence. It could complicate things dramatically if she underestimated these guys. It wasn’t just a dodgy pill they were dealing with here ... it could be a very high-level demon.
“Are they gone?” she whispered, watching Flash’s face. He had his head tilted to the side, listening to the footsteps of the men.
“They’re getting in the elevator now,” Flash said quietly. Cass breathed a sigh of relief and stood to straighten her clothes.
“Aww,” Flash muttered. “Don’t go putting all my toys away. I wasn’t done playing with them yet.”
“Ha-ha,” Cass muttered, slapping his hand away. “We came close enough to fucking up the mission today. We don’t need a round two.”
“How about round three or four?” Flash asked, holding her arms gently and pulling her against him. “It might be even better if I could tag in another team member, like my best pal Slade.”
Cass felt the strength go out of her as Flash kissed her. She sagged against his strong chest, wondering if she’d heard him correctly or if she was so fixated on her fantasies she was hearing what she wanted to hear.
“Quit it,” she muttered, pushing him away. “We have to get moving. One of those guys is possessed by an extremely strong demon. Well, they both could be. It’s difficult to tell. The bottom line is, I need intel on this and fast.”
“Yeah, okay. They said they had the thing planned for Halloween?”
Cass nodded. “The day when the veil is at its thinnest.”
“What? That’s real?”
Cass grinned. “Yes. Don’t get me wrong, there are other days, and you can push through the veil in lots of other ways too. But All Hallows Eve, the day of the dead, is the most effective time to conjure … and to be possessed.”
“So, you think whatever is going down, it’s happening on Halloween?”
“Yeah,” she said. “Got no idea how free money fits in, though. What is he going to do? Offer up free antidepressants to anyone who gets their number called?”
Flash laughed softly. “You never know. What do you think we should do?”
Cass looked at him, seeing sincerity on his face. It pleased her that he genuinely cared about her opinion. It made up for him suddenly appearing in the middle of her covert mission.
“Well, we have to figure out what Crenshaw is up to, and we need to do it quickly,” she said. “We’re running out of time, and so many innocent people could get hurt by this. Maybe we should stake out his favorite places and shake down anyone in his chain of command.”
