“Fine, I’ll only crush their skulls in, for diplomacy,” Sam retorted. “It might improve their intelligence.”
I heard Mark’s snort of laughter, and then Zadis jumped out of the window with me, breaking it as we flew out into the night, in the direction of Simon’s.
Hopefully we would be able to get in without him home.

“Well, that didn’t go as expected,” Zadis said, as he carried me safely through the night, his drunkenness only causing him to zig-zag slightly while flying.
We flew down low over the grounds, down between the hedge rows and under the trees, until we landed at the gate that led to Simon’s human project.
Zadis set me down gently and then reached in his pocket and pulled out a long, silver key, which he put in the gate. “Simon said I could have this if I wanted to visit his humans. You know, since fae don’t feed on them.”
He unlocked the gate and pushed it open, and I tried to ignore the heady feeling of being drunk as I followed him in. Now that people weren’t trying to kill us, the wine was giving me a very pleasant feeling.
He took my hand, solicitous as always, and I marveled at how much lighter his touch was. How much gentler than Samael’s.
As he pulled me along toward the small lights in front of Simon’s house, I saw figures in the dark skitter toward their houses.
A part of me felt bad for these humans. So afraid of someone they didn’t need to be. I wanted to go visit them, tell them Simon wasn’t what they thought he was, but then I realized since they were probably in on the Keep gossip, they were moving away from me as well.
The evil fake Morningstar. The thought made me wish I had more of that dragon wine.
Zadis unlocked the door to Simon’s place and called up to see if anyone was there. Of course no one was, but it was good to check all the same.
We moved into the kitchen, where an elegant teal table and teal chairs with cushions sat. Zadis opened the fridge and looked around, then closed it.
“I’m too drunk to figure it out,” he said. “We’ll have to wait for Simon to get here.” He closed his eyes. “Let me see if I can call for Simon through our blood link.”
“You can do that?” I asked, as the room swum slightly. My head was light and I felt relaxed and heady with the wine.
“Nope,” Zadis said. “Only sometimes. It’s not like you and Sam. But if you feed a vampire, you have the right to call on them, with your blood.”
My eyes widened. “Woah.”
“Don’t know why he’s not answering,” Zadis said.
“A bit worrisome,” I said, pushing to stand. “Should we go find him? I don’t trust him being with that Vasara nightmare.”
Zadis put a hand on my shoulder and firmly pushed me back down into the chair, making me sit down with a thud. “Simon has it well in hand, and you’re in no condition to go back there.” He looked me over. “Let’s go upstairs and see if Simon has something that can take care of that blood on your dress for you.”
“Do you think Samael and Mark are okay?” I asked nervously.
“Call Sam through your bond,” Zadis said. “Seriously, that’s a huge benefit the two of you have. You should use it more often.”
Samael?I called, somewhat drunkenly.
I’m here.He seemed similarly drunk though not to the same extent. We’re looking for Simon to try and deal with this.
This?
A lot of vampire bodies. I’m sorry, Cleo.
Don’t worry about it.
Mark is trying to talk to me. I’ll talk to you soon. Stay with Zadis.I could almost hear the smirk through our bond.Maybe try some things. You know, together.
Without you there?
