Vivian grabs my phone. “Chase, think before you act.”
“It’s Meredith.”
“Yes. I’m sure it is. But she’s not stable. Let’s go to the police.”
“How did she get your number? How does she know where I’m staying?”
Vivian lifts a shoulder and lets it drop. “My number is everywhere. She obviously saw the article in the paper. All she had to do was google my name, and my cell phone pops up. Maybe she followed us out of the restaurant?”
The hair on the back of my neck stands up, and I step out of the booth, throw some cash on the table, and pull Vivian up. “Let’s get out of here.”
Scanning the room, I don’t notice Meredith anywhere, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t hiding in a dark corner. I continue to survey the area all the way to my room. When I unlock the door, we both step inside, and I tell Vivian to wait.
I do a quick sweep of the room and see we are alone then lock the door and pull Vivian over to an armchair, sit down, then settle her on my lap. “I can’t believe she’s doing this. I’m sorry.”
“We need to inform the police,” Vivian says.
I pull out my phone then call the police station and put it on speakerphone.
After we explain the situation to the officer, he asks if we are in immediate danger. I tell him that we are in our locked hotel room. He says we have to come down to the station and that we have two choices. We can report it tonight or tomorrow, and then he warns us that the station is already crazy with Friday night incidents. He also tells us that without proof who the blocked number belongs to, or some other evidence it’s Meredith, that they aren’t going to be able to do anything except document it.
I hang up the phone. “Let’s go report this. I want a restraining order filed against her so she can’t come near you.”
“You heard the officer. We don’t have any proof.”
“We need to report this. She’s threatening and harassing you.”
Vivian strokes the side of my head. “I have a better idea.”
“What’s that?”
“Let’s do it first thing tomorrow. You heard the officer. It’s already crazy down at the station. There isn’t anything the police can do tonight. Let’s turn both our phones off and enjoy each other. You’re leaving Sunday night, and I don’t want to spend our time in the police station fighting the Friday night crazies.” Vivian’s phone rings. “It’s Páppa.”
I motion for her to take it.
“Páppa—” She stands up and starts pacing. “Calm down, Páppa.” Vivian shakes her head angrily.
“What’s going on?” I whisper.
“That is not true, Páppa.” She runs her hands through her hair then freezes. “What did you just say?” Slowly, she scans my eyes.
“Vivian, what’s going on?” I say a little louder than a whisper.
She holds up her finger. “Páppa, I don’t want you to worry, but she is an ex of Chase’s, and she is obsessed about him. He hasn’t seen her in months. We ran into her at lunch today, and he told her very nicely that she needed to move on. She has been sending both of us crazy messages. We called the police and will be going to the station tomorrow.”
As she’s talking, my rage builds. What has Meredith done now? How did I not see she was crazy?
“Páppa, Chase and I are locked in his hotel room. We were at dinner in the restaurant downstairs when she started sending me threats. I’m perfectly safe right now.”
I can’t believe this is happening.
I hold out my hand to Vivian. “Give me the phone.”
She grips it tighter.
“Give it to me,” I urge.
“Páppa, I’m putting you on speakerphone. Chase wants to talk to you.” Vivian puts her phone against her stomach. “Meredith called my parents and told my father that you are cheating on her with me. She also said that she is your fiancée.”
