“Oh, Daddy.” She squeezed his arm. “I love you too.”
The music changed and swelled. About damn time.
“Here we go.” She bounced in her white heels before she took small, steady steps down the aisle, deliberately clamping down on her urge to sprint and jump into Dom’s arms.
The look on Dom’s face made her efforts worthwhile. She wanted to savor his shock. His jaw was dropped and his cheeks flushed, until she made eye contact with him and grinned. Then his slack lips stretched into her favorite smile, the one he used right before he said I love you.
She put her whole heart into her smile as she strode slowly toward her future.
As her father passed her hand into her soon-to-be husband’s, Dom asked the only question that really mattered. “Ready?”
“Absolutely.”
He squeezed her hand tight three times, linking their fingers, and a tear spilled over from his shining eyes.
She squeezed back four and reached into her bodice for the handkerchief. Everyone in the pews laughed and Dom grinned.
And so she started her married life as she meant to continue, surrounded by laughter and smiles.
