But she wasn’t ready to give up. Her reactions to Alessandro today confirmed it. She didn’t need to waste any more energy on trying to replace what she already had. She needed to figure out how to fix it. And this emotional ping-pong was giving her a headache.
“Alessi, thank you for lunch, but I really should be going.” Jo reached for her purse and secured it on her shoulder.
“Wait, what do you mean? You’ve barely touched your food.”
“I need to head home.” She pushed her chair back.
“Is this about the wine?” he asked.
“No, it’s about my husband.”
“I thought he was out of the picture.”
“He’s moving back into the frame.” She rose and he stood, awkwardly looking for their server.
“I see. Do you need a ride home?”
Jo stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.
“No, I’m fine. Stay and enjoy your lunch. I can take care of myself.”
