“Thanks for pointing that out.”
Jenna continued chuckling. “No problem! Tell my baby girl to call me when she gets home. I don’t care how late it is.”
“Fine.”
He was about to hang up when he heard Jenna say, “Asher?”
“Yeah.”
“She’s going to be okay, right?”
Jenna had never looked to him for reassurance when it came to Blake. She’d always been so sure of herself as a mother. But, Blake’s behavior over the past year had really shaken her confidence.
Hearing her uncertainty caused him to make a promise he had no business making. “Yeah, she is.”
After hanging up he was just pulling out of the parking lot when he saw a familiar sight and pressed the brakes. It was Ponytail. He couldn’t see the upper portion of her face, since she was wearing oversized sunglasses but he could see her left hand.
She wasn’t wearing the ring. Sometime over the past two days she’d taken it off.
He wondered when and then felt like a creep staring at her as she walked down the path away from where the campers were. It was then that he noticed that she was wearing a camp T-shirt, which meant that she must be working there.
So many questions filled his mind.
Had Blake met her?
What did she do for the camp?
Who would plan a wedding the weekend before a camp they were working at?
And most importantly, what man would leave a woman that looked like that?
He’d tried to tell himself that he would wonder those things about anyone because he had a detective’s brain and it had nothing to do with the woman in question having curves that rivaled any pinup he’d ever seen, long silky hair, and full lips that made his mouth water but that last question revealed that it was more than just his detective instincts that had him wondering about the jilted bride.
When she disappeared down the path, it was like a spell had been broken and Asher tried to shake off the magnetic attraction he’d felt toward the mysterious woman.
He’d just pulled out onto the main drag when he got a text from Logan.
Logan: Emma said Blake is staying for the campfire and she’s bringing her home. Meet us at JT’s for a beer.
It looked like he was going to get in some bonding time after all.
