She flushed at his words. Max wondered why, but didn’t ask.

“Alright.”

Lu slipped on her shoes, while Max did the same before retrieving his jacket.

They walked arm-in-arm up the theater aisle, turning off the lights with the master switch.

The walk to her home was much shorter than Max had wanted. Within five minutes they stood on her stoop, Lu with key in hand. She bit her lip, and he swooped in for a quick, heated kiss before releasing her.

If he’d kissed her any longer, he would never leave, but her reputation would be in tatters. He wouldn’t do that to her.

He dashed down the walkway and stood, watching her enter the house. When the door closed softly behind her, he turned and headed around the loop to his own house, the cool night air finally chilling his ardor before he did something stupid.

Like tell her he was madly in love with her.

* * *

Lu hadthe most pleasant of dreams, in which she was enraptured with only the feel of his lips and hands all over her body, and hers on his.

In her dreams, he was perfect. Her own Adonis.

She awoke with a smile when she realized the perfection wasn’t just in her dreams.

Her hands had touched his hard flesh, covered in hot skin and crisp, dark hair.

He was the man she’d been looking for, even if she hadn’t realized it.

She stretched her arms and legs, and was satisfied with the dull ache between her legs. Max had thoroughly pleased her, and she hoped he felt the same.

A knock at her bedroom door, accompanied by Dorie’s chipper morning voice, snapped her out of her reverie. “Oh, Lu. There’s something here for you. And there’s coffee, too.”

Dor could see she needed the latter.

But what was here for her?

She wrapped her robe around her and tied it before slinking out of the kitchen, where she was greeted with a bundle of yellow sunflowers and purple hyacinths. He must have gone out of his way to find the flowers so early on this Saturday morning.

She pulled out the card.

Good morning sunshine. Thank you for last night. Monday morning can’t come soon enough.

With all my affection, your-not-so-secret admirer.

Lu clasped the card to her chest and grinned, before skipping back to her room. Dorie followed.

“Oh, no, Lucinda Rae Danvers, you don’t get off that easy. You tell me what this is all about.”

“This,” Lu said as she waved the card form the flowers at her friend, “is something you had a hand in. Don’t deny it.”

“Max?” Dorie smiled and clapped.

“Who else would it be?” Lu dropped the card on her nightstand.

“Are you going to see him again today? Please say yes!”

“I don’t think so. Is it a good idea, really? We work together—”

Dorie wagged a finger at Lu. “You stop now. You like him. He likes you. And my goodness, you are two of the most beautiful people ever, so why fight it?”

“Why indeed?” Lu whispered to herself.

And as much as she desired to see Max, she’d be patient. Wait till Monday. She had so much to do, errands to run this weekend, so she would fill her time and not miss him.

Not miss him too much anyway.
