“What happened to your husband?”
Sadness becomes his eyes, his lips slightly turning down. “War happened to him.”
Oh, god.
Shit!
“I’m so sorry for your loss.”
“Thank you.” He inclines his head.
“Losing him must have been devastating. And to raise your son all alone. My god… I don’t know how you did it—all of it—alone.”
“It was. He was my everything, my friend, my husband. And raising my son wasn’t a hardship. I had plenty of help from friends and his family.”
“How do you do it? You know, be away from your son for months, racing, traveling? It must be so hard.”
“You know what I do for a living?” His eyebrows touch his hairline.
I nod. “Calder, my friend who was with me, told me you are a Formula One race driver and a champion.”
“Ahh, okay.” He dips his head, acknowledging my answer.
“Tell me, how do you do it?”
“Actually, I take him with me everywhere. And I’ve hired a full-time nanny to look after him when I’m on the racetrack. Be it competing or practice.”
“That’s good. This way, you’ll not miss seeing him grow.”
“Yeah, that was my thought exactly.” He grins and leans forward and grabs his beer bottle and takes a sip. “Do you want anything to drink?”
“I’ve had more than my quota for the day. I think I’m good. But I wouldn’t say no to a glass of juice.”
He flags a waiter and orders a glass of orange juice for me.
“You know what I do for a living. Now tell me, what do you do for a living?”
“I’m a Materials Manager for McKing Motors, in Sacramento, California. It’s a new company and focuses on manufacturing high-end luxury cars. They are in league with some of the top brands in the automotive industry, like Tesla, Mercedes, Porsche, etc.”
“Oh, I’ve heard of them. They sponsored the United States Grand Prix last year.”
“Yep, that’s us.”
“Nice. Do you enjoy it?”
“I do.”
“What are you guys doing here in L.A.?”
“We came to attend a two-day conference and then have a mini-vacation. We’ll be here for at least a week.”
His eyes light up and a soft smile spreads across his face. “That’s good to know.”
I smile. Yeah, it’s fucking good.
My juice arrives and I take a sip of my cool drink, letting it soothe my parched throat. I close my eyes and sigh.
Oh, my God, I didn’t know I was this thirsty, even after gulping two entire bottles of water.
