“Probably not,” Wilma replied with a grin. “I’ll bring over a coffee. You want anything to eat?”
“Had my breakfast earlier,” I told her as I headed to the table and shrugged off my coat. The smell of the bakery in the grocery store caught my attention—it was an ingenious idea. When Rhett bought this property, he knocked a connection through to the grocery store, to entice the customer further and get even more money out of them. “I’ll take a cookie,” I called over my shoulder to Wilma and heard her soft laugh at my order.
My coffee was almost finished when Rhett came through the door, his hand already held up in apology. “Two more minutes,” he called as he hurried to the back of the shop, and then he was back, jacket off and a bunch of documents in his hands. “Sorry about that,” he said as he sat at the table and thanked Wilma, who placed a steaming cup of white foamy coffee in front of him, alongside another black coffee for me. “This morning’s been a day,” he told me before he took a long drink. “Mmm,” he murmured with appreciation. “Wilma makes the best cappuccinos in town,” he told me with satisfaction, frowning slightly when he saw my plain black coffee. “You should try a hazelnut latte.”
“You should know better than to interfere with a man’s coffee.”
Rhett’s head tilted back as he laughed. “Very true, but honestly, hazelnut latte, it’s your drink.” He tipped his coffee cup at me as I shook my head at his optimism. “So, I have the paperwork, just in case you like what I’m thinking,” he added hurriedly as it was my turn to frown. “But, here, look at this.” I sat up straighter as he rolled out a plan detailing the acreages of the winery and also the neighbouring land of the ranch.
As we talked over his thoughts on the expansion, I looked up some time later and saw Peyton heading to the coffee shop, and she looked pissed. Rhett saw my smile and looked over his shoulder.
“Who’s that?” he asked me innocently as he watched her approach.
“Donna’s niece. Great niece, you know…”
“Peyton? Oh, wow, I didn’t recognise her. She looks…”
“Furious,” I finished for him.
