Jett took a step back, away from me. My eyes widened. Was he rejecting me?

He held up a finger. “Don’t move. I’ll be right back.”

He covered the distance to the safe in two quick strides, kneeling to unlock the combination. Not even Jett could rush that. He tried and cursed as he had to start over. I chuckled.

“Not funny. Maybe you should come and help.”

“I’ll crack your safe any time, you just have to ask.” I’d meant it to be light-hearted and flirty but I was so gone with desire that it came out needy.

Jett looked over his shoulder at me. “I love you. Just so we’re clear.”

I swallowed, hard, and met his eyes. “I love you too.”

“Good. Now let me concentrate.” He turned back to the safe.

Finally, he got the safe open and put the gems inside. The door closed with a solid clunk and he spun the wheel, locking it again.

He stalked towards me, hot intent on his face. I shivered, excitement filling me. How could I be this lucky?

Jett reached the desk, nestling in between my legs and pulling me close. He growled, the low rumble of sound surprising me.

“What’s wrong?”

He lifted the leather thong around my neck with the yellow crystal Fin had given me hanging off it. “You keeping this?”

I grinned. “I should. Fin owes me.” I covered his hand with mine. “But I’m going to give it to Clara. She’s got a halfling, a mediana, of her own to look out for. I’ve got a feeling she’ll need it more than me.”

“Just as well.” He lifted the crystal from around my neck and placed it carefully to the side. “I hate you wearing another man’s gift. It’s the predator in me.”

I touched his cheek with my palm and he snuggled into my hand, turning his attention back to me. I was going to have to ask him what kind of shifter he was, but not right now.

“You good?” His green eyes met mine, tiny creases at the corners making him look worried.

“I’m good. You?”

“Shark found the bullet that hit me in the alley. Fin wasn’t shooting bullets, he wanted to take you alive. Which means we’ve got another shooter.”

My gut clenched. “Who were they after?”

“We don’t know. We’re back to square one.” He bent his mouth to mine, feathering soft kisses along the seam of my lips. “But that’s a problem for tomorrow.”

I reached for his hips, snagging the waistband of his jeans and tugging him closer. “Too right it is. Tonight is about love, and family, and making it back alive from Faerie Land. But mostly love.”

He chuckled, the sound vibrating low in his chest. “You’ve got that right.”

The End
