“I’m taking him down.” He glanced in the direction of the roof top. His meaning was clear.
“No! It’s too dangerous.” I grasped his arm, pointing my chin at Clara. “We need your help here.”
Clara’s face was ashen. She was bleeding from a cut over her eye. I wasn’t sure if she’d been hit by a bullet or something else.
“Don’t mind me,” she said.
Jett looked back towards the roof, clearly torn.
“I’m strong, but I’m not sure how far I can carry her. And we don’t know if they have backup on the ground nearby.”
Jett nodded once, decisively. “Follow me.”
He scooped Clara up easily and took off at a run, keeping his body between her and the gun man on the roof.
I swore, and dashed after him.
