She shook her head. “Declan’s probably still at the fire station. We’ll stop there next.”
She kissed him and then strode into the office as if she owned it, not even twirling her hair.
He was so proud of her.
Chapter 22
Georgie’s hand shook as she clutched the keys of the four-wheel drive in her hand. For all her bravado she was scared this would be the end of her career.
Karen jumped up from behind the desk. “You’re all right! What the hell happened?”
Georgie handed her the keys. “It’s a long story, but Matt’s safe. Is Declan still at the fire station?”
The woman nodded. “Everyone is.”
“Thanks.” Georgie walked out before Karen could ask any further questions and got into the driver’s seat.
“Everything OK?”
“We need to make one more stop.” Her heart thumped as she parked outside the fire station. Her colleagues were doing hose drills out the back with Penelope on the hose. Georgie grabbed her fire jacket from the back seat, skirted the building and approached Declan.
He glanced behind her to her car. “You’re both alive.”
She nodded. “I’m sorry for running off like that.”
“Are you going to tell me what happened?”
“I don’t know how much I can say. Dot will fill you in.”
“Did she catch who did it?”
She bit her lip. “The danger Dot told you about isn’t an issue anymore.”
His eyes widened. “Arrested?”
Word would get out eventually. “Dead.” She took a breath. “The police have taken the PAWS rifle into custody.”
He shifted slightly away from her. Not much, but enough. “Are you under arrest?”
“No.” Not yet. She hadn’t considered how her taking the blame for Clark’s death would make others treat her.
“Can you tell me anything else?”
She shook her head. “Can I skip the rest of the day? I’ll organise to attend some of the volunteer fire fighter sessions to catch up on what I missed.”
He nodded. “Take a couple of days if you need it. I’ll call Dot later.”
“Thank you.” Her muscles relaxed.
Penelope strode over. “You’re OK. Where’s Matt?”
“In the car.”
“What happened?”
“I can’t say.” Georgie hugged her. “Thanks for your help today.”
Penelope stiffened and then relaxed, hugging her back. “I didn’t do anything. Did they catch the guy?”
