I figured it was probably better to be honest with him about my feelings, since that was part of this whole agreement, anyway. We spent enough time in our lives not sharing our real feelings, so to hold back didn’t feel right.
Tonight. I would tell him tonight.
I threw my phone on the bed and got dressed for the day, deciding to stay comfy in an oversized T-shirt and sweats since I’d just be working from home on the couch today. I put my hair into French braided pigtails so that it would be fun and flirty later after it dried, and then I made my way back out to the kitchen.
Adam was home, sitting at the table with Rachel as they ate their breakfast. Rachel was laughing at something he’d just said, pure adoration in her eyes as she looked at him. It made my heart melt, and strengthened the feeling of wanting to share every morning like this withmyperson. “Well aren’t you just the cutest lovebirds,” I sing-songed to them as I went to make my own plate at the stove.
“Good morning, sister.” Adam’s tone was cheerful, but he sounded tired. He’d been working almost every night this past week, which was a lot because his shifts were usually about twelve hours long.
“How was work?” I asked.
“Good. Long. I can’t wait to hit the sack.”
“I bet. Are you home tonight?”
“No, the neurology department is pretty short-staffed right now and we have quite a few patients on the floor, so I need to be there. If I can bump up a few surgeries it will really help alleviate our limited capacity with beds.”
Rachel shook her head. “I keep telling him he needs to take a break. He’s going to work himself to death.”
Adam threw Rachel a smirk. “Babe, I can handle it, okay? I’m a strong surgeon, and they need me.”
I was reminded of what it was like growing up with a father who so willingly gave himself to his patients. There were so many times that he was away, missing big moments in our lives, but I knew he wassavinglives and it made it all worth it. He was a hero, and Adam was following right along in those footsteps.
“I don’t doubt your strength, honey. But I would like to see you have a night off soon so you can give your body and mind a break.” Rachel’s tone was firm but gentle, delivered with a smile. I liked knowing that she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind to my brother. Adam was undoubtedly kind and considerate, but when it came to his work and being the best, he could be very stubborn. He needed someone like Rachel keeping him in check.
I loaded up my plate with food and joined them at the table, listening to the two of them go back and forth as they talked about work. Soon, Rachel got up to get ready for her own day, saying that some of her prosthetic prototypes were going into testing next week and she and her colleagues needed to make a few modifications to the design. She disappeared into Adam’s room to take a shower.
Adam finished his plate shortly after, and after putting his dishes in the sink he, too, headed toward his room. “I’m going to pass out, Millie. But I’ll see you later?”
“Yep,” I smiled. “I’ll be around today.”
Adam nodded in response before he shut his bedroom door behind him. I finished the eggs on my plate before I hurried back to my room, grabbing my phone to text Logan back.
Come here. It’ll be safe.
And Logan… I’m done with your rules.
I’d spentthe last hour making pan-seared scallops and pasta as I waited patiently for Logan to get here. Before I started cooking, I spent a little time cleaning up the apartment and getting myself ready, putting on comfortable jeans and a tight sweater. I’d taken my hair out of the braids I’d put in this morning and was pleased at the beach wave effect they’d left.
After he finally texted me that he was on his way over, I put some garlic bread in the oven and cleaned up my mess in the kitchen before setting the table for two. I couldn’t help the giant smile on my face as I set two plates out, knowing Logan would soon sit at the table with me to enjoy a home cooked meal. And then for dessert, he could enjoyme. My body positively ached for him, and the anticipation had me feeling a bit breathless.
It wasn’t long before I heard a firm knock at the door, and when I swung it open, Logan was instantly lurching himself forward to kiss me. His hands cupped my face as his mouth hungrily consumed mine. He smelled like cedar and motor oil and the mix of both was sexy as hell.
He steered me backward into the kitchen with his body, kicking the door shut behind him. “You drive me completely insane, Amelia,” he murmured into my ear. “I couldn’t focus on anything today except getting to you as fast as I could.”
I smiled, relishing the moment. His mouth found my neck and he not-so-gently nibbled at my skin as he lifted me up onto the kitchen counter. My hands eagerly swept over his chest as my legs wrapped around his hips, and I couldn’t help but feel the spark of immense relief at having him close to me like this again. To feel his body against mine—I didn’t know that I would ever get enough of this high.
Logan was just as eager as I was, pulling up the hem of my shirt and swiftly taking it off of me, exposing the black lace bra that I’d put on for him. I started unbuttoning his work shirt, and when I glanced up I saw that he was smiling brightly at me, a funny look in his eye. “Are you cooking?”
“Yes.”
“For me?”
I feigned annoyance at his interruption, rolling my eyes. “Yes.”
He nipped at my chin, but his eyes were alight as he hummed his appreciation. “It smells amazing.”
“No, Logan,yousmell amazing.”
