Seth already looked more at ease, which was more than I could say for myself.

I’d never tutored kids before, and I’d rarely been around them, either. I’d been a loner growing up, mostly keeping to myself, aside from my best friend. I didn’t have much experience with kids, even when I’d been one myself.

Seth was cool, outgoing and cheerful with a big personality. Those kids would probably love him on the spot. I didn’t know if I’d get the same warm reaction.

“This is the music room.” Jessie nodded to a room at the end of the hallway. “The kids should be showing up in a few minutes. Did Morris talk to you about the program?”

“There’s a group of older students putting together a rock band, right?” Seth said. “So I’m basically mentoring them. Sounds like an awesome gig.” Before entering the room, Seth turned to me. He looked a little nervous, and a little hopeful.

“You want to stick around afterwards?” he asked. “We can get a bite to eat or something.”

Butterflies took wing in my stomach. Seth still wanted to hang out with me.

Considering how I felt about him, did this make things better or worse?

“Sure,” I said, against my better instincts. “I’ve love to.”
