“They didn’t know where to look for Walter, but now they will. They can send someone.”

“Whatever. But be quick. We don’t want to lose him.”

“Okay.”

“And once we’re out there, you’re going to do exactly as I say and follow my lead.”

“Yeah, yeah.” I waved my hand and hurried to contact Vix.

Chapter 10

“ARE YOU SURE HE’S GOING to show up here?” I said as I leaned on the low wall in front of me. Theo had picked one of the buildings that wasn’t too tall, and we’d sneaked inside and climbed onto the rooftop. There was a small garden up here too, and the greenery prevented anyone from getting a clear shot at us from the neighboringbuildings behind us, so we were able to focus on the street below. But time had trickled by and the guy hadn’t shown up, or at least we hadn’t seen him yet.

“Patience,” Theo said, glancing down at his phone. He’d brought a sniper rifle with him and set it up so he could hit Walter easily once he came into view. “Walter comes to this area often, and he should be here. He doesn’t have a setschedule so he’d be harder to catch, but he’ll come here eventually. If not, then we’ll have to try tomorrow.”

I tapped my foot against the floor as I gazed down at the people who were rushing up and down the street. We’d brought a pair of binoculars with us, and I lifted them up to my eyes so I could see better, but I didn’t recognize any of the faces.

“If you’re bored, you can alwaysgo back to my apartment.” Amusement flickered through his eyes.

“And what would I do there? Be even more bored?”

He shrugged.

“Maybe I should call the Cobras and have them patrol this area. I know it’s not theirs and they might get in trouble if they’re discovered, but they can hide their tattoos. Just look at how many people there are. No one would notice.”

“Walter would. He’dspot them from a mile away, and it wouldn’t be because of their tattoos.”

“They don’t have to actually be here. They can just monitor the cameras.”

“They’re already doing that, but this area is complicated to watch. That’s why we had to come here.”

I focused on the street, but I couldn’t see any cameras except for one in front of a bar, and that one was turned directly toward theentrance, so unless Walter decided to walk straight into that bar, the Cobras wouldn’t be able to see him. “What if he no longer has a reason to come here? What if he’ll go check my apartment or Vix’s club?”

“Your friend would’ve called you if Walter was there, wouldn’t she?”

“Yeah, I guess.” I checked my phone again, but there weren’t any texts or missed calls.

Theo’s body stiffenedand he aimed the rifle at someone, then swore under his breath.

I used my binoculars again, but I couldn’t see Walter anywhere. “What’s wrong? Do you see him?”

“Yeah,” he said. “But I can’t get a clear shot.”

“I can’t see him. Where is he?” I was looking for the dark-haired, blue-eyed man I’d seen in the photos on Theo’s computer, but I couldn’t find him anywhere.

“Right there.”Theo moved, but he was at the edge of the roof, and since he didn’t pull the trigger, I knew Walter had gotten away. “Next to that blue neon sign and that woman with a baby stroller.”

I finally spotted him. “Wait, but this guy’s blond.”

“It’s him. He’s wearing a wig.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah. That was his usual disguise when he went on the Rosa Nera’s special missions.” Theo loweredthe sniper rifle. “Fuck. He got away. He’s way too close to other people.”

I was really glad Theo wasn’t willing to hurt innocent people just to get to Walter. “We should follow him.”

Theo’s gaze was focused on the street for a moment, and he didn’t move. “Have you ever been to a bar or something around here?”
