He watched her face go hard. “You’re really going to pretend it didn’t happen? I fucking saw you! Hanging all over that woman like…”

“What woman? Who are you talking about?”

He watched her walk over to the minibar and grab a bottle out of it.

“I don’t think…”

“Fuck you,” she said before drinking the contents of the bottle. “You have no right to tell me what to do.”

“Stop it,” he said as he stepped toward her. He needed to get her to stop and listen. “I really need you to explain what you’re talking about.”

“I saw you. You were in the bar in front of everybody hugging that slut.”

In the bar? He hadn’t been with a woman in the bar. Sure, he’d met with Trisha about his contract but that was it. “Are you talking about Trisha?”

“Oh, is that the slut’s name?” she sneered.

His face went hard. “Trisha is Corey’s sister.”

“Why were you hugging her? I thought we were exclusive but I guess…”

He laughed. “You’re pissed because I hugged Trisha?”

“Yeah, I am. Why were you hugging some random woman in a bar in Portland?” Her eyes were blazing with anger.

“I never knew you had such a temper,” he said with a laugh.

“Quit laughing at me and explain,” she said, her teeth clenched.

He put his hands on her arms. “I’m not laughing at you.”

“Sounds like it to me,” she said as she stepped back.

He closed the distance between them. “You’re gorgeous when you’re angry.”

“Are you going to explain or what?”

He took her hands in his, gripping them tighter when she tried to pull away. “Trisha is Corey’s sister.”

“So, you already said. What does that have to do with anything?” she snapped.

“She’s a lawyer. I was consulting with her about a clause in my contract.”

“And that requires you to have your hands all over her?”

He smiled. “I wanted to be clear what would happen if I retired before the end of my contract. She’d just explained that I could retire without a penalty if I gave them proper notice.”

“Retirement? Why were you asking about the retirement clause…” she stopped. “Are you thinking about retirement?” Her body started to relax “You weren’t trying to get her in your bed?”

“No,” he said with a laugh. “I’m so in love with this girl kicker that I don’t even look at other women.”

Lowering her head she said, “Oh God, I can’t believe I let myself believe you would do that to me.” She sat on the end of the bed. “I’m so sorry, I don’t know…”

He pulled her up off the bed and into his arms. “I would never cheat on you. I’m so in love with you I can’t think straight most of the time.”

“I’m such an idiot. Can you forgive me for thinking you would do that?” she said as she looked up at him.

He held her close, kissing the top of her head. “To be honest, I can see how you would think that. Before you, I did go from woman to woman, not letting anyone get close enough to see the real me. Then you kicked your way into my life and into my heart.”
