“So he’s watching you?”
“Just to see if I ever walk into a fed building. I do that, I’m a ghost. Not like he’s taking photos of me in bed or some shit. Just checkin’ in, occasionally.”
“Oh.” I look up at him. “So…it’s over? Does this mean we can…” I don’t know how to put it. “Stop hiding in the Broken Arrow base?”
“I’ll always be a Broken Arrow, babe.” He smiles down at me. “But I can come out of hiding, now, yeah.”
“Does that mean you can take me on a real date, now?”
“You want that?”
I frown at him. “Uh, yeah?”
“Never been on a date.”
I blink. “You…what?”
“I’ve never been on a date. Never had a girlfriend, never dated. Don’t really know how to date.”
I pat his chest. “Well, I’ll teach you.”
He laughs. “I like how you teach me shit, Mike.”
There’s one of the Sin SUVs waiting under the portico by the front doors—Chance goes to take the back seat, but I push at him.
“Chance, hon, there’s no way you’re fitting in the back seat.”
He grins, shrugs. “I can squeeze.”
I pat his arm. “It’s okay. Sit with your brother.” I shoot Kane a look. “I can hang with Kane in the back.”
Kane, rounding the back, holds out a fist. “Hell yeah, sister.”
I tap my knuckles to his and climb in behind the passenger front seat. Rev drives. I lean forward and rest my elbows on the console between the front seats. “So. Home?”
Rev glances over his shoulder at me. “Where’s home for you?”
I grab his bicep, kiss it. “Wherever you are, sweetheart.”
“Ah, fuck. Sappy-ass bullshit. God.” Kane thunks his head back against the seat rest, grinning despite his words. “Put a cap in it, you two, or I’m liable to put a cap in myself.”
“You’re just jealous of ‘em, bro.” Chance laughs, not looking at him.
“No.” Kane sounds downright petulant.
“I smell that bullshit a mile away.” Chance grins, still facing forward. “You want a fine-ass honey to call you sweetheart. Don’t deny it.”
Kane doesn’t answer, and for once, there’s no sparkle in his eyes, no humor. If anything, he looks haunted. He shakes his head, and the happy-go-lucky grin is back. “Ah, shut up, Chance. What do you know? You’re jealous too, I bet.”
“Fuck yeah, I am.” He turns his head, almost looking at me. “Got any single sisters?”
I laugh. “No, unfortunately. They’re all spoken for.”
“Well shit.” A long-suffering sigh. “Guess we’ll have to wait for another lost female to wander her ass into the club.” He finally looks at Kane. “I’ll let you take next, bro. You’re welcome. Don’t say I never did shit for you.”
Kane laughs, still staring out the window as we leave Vegas proper. “Yeah, thanks, man. I ain’t holdin’ my breath, though.”
The mask slips again briefly. This time, he looks at me before he stows the haunted expression once more.
