I carried everything out into the garage and began washing the roller in the sink. I knew that Brenna usually liked washing everything up, but I couldn’t be certain when she would be back. She had texted me that she was stopping for coffee about 20minutes earlier, but with how busy the coffee shop usually was, I knew it could be a while.

“Hey, Ry,” I yelled. “Are you done out there?”

“Yep,” Rylan said, walking into the garage with a bag full of tree clippings. He had finished pruning everything out front.

“Awesome,” I said. “Thanks so much for all of your help this week. You have been a fantastic worker.”

Rylan smiled. “I’ve really had fun. But I was wondering if we were done for today?”

“Yes,” I said. “Why?”

“Because my friend Thomas lives up the street and he just invited me up to play ping-pong.”

I laughed. “Well, that’s perfect timing. Sure, have fun. Tell Thomas and his family I said hello. I’ll come and get you in a couple of hours.”

“Thanks, Papa Josh,” Rylan said, running out of the garage and toward his friend’s house.

As I finished cleaning everything up, I heard my phone ringing inside. I ran inside to grab it, and when I saw Greg’s name on my screen, I was worried. I knew that he would not call me unless it was absolutely urgent.

“Hello?” I said.

“Hey,” Greg said. “Nothing is wrong, but I absolutely needed to get in touch with you today.”

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“Well, in about five minutes you are going to be getting a phone call from the Rogers Company.”

“The Rogers Company? You mean the development company in London?”

“Yes, exactly. That company.”

“Why are they calling me?” I asked.

“I’m not sure,” he said. “Apparently, they called the office yesterday and asked for you. I happened to go into the officetoday, and I saw the message on the front desk. I called them to see if I could help with anything since the Rogers group is not a group to be kept waiting.”

“Absolutely not,” I said.

“When I called them just now, they told me they were looking to speak with you directly. I gave them your phone number but told them to wait a few minutes to call you so that I could let you know to expect the call. I wasn’t certain you would answer a call from a number you didn’t recognize.”

“Interesting,” I said. “Thank you very much for taking care of that. I am so glad you saw the message.”

“Me too,” Greg said. “Let me know what you find out!”

“Of course I will!”

I hung up the phone and wondered why the Rogers group would be calling me. They were the most prestigious development firm in London and were known for being behind some of the most famous projects in the world.

Knowing that Brenna and her mom would be home soon, I decided to walk to the park down the street to take the call.

I sent her a quick text:

Hey. I had to step out real quick for an important phone call. Ry left to go to his friend’s house. I’ll be back soon. If you need help getting out of the truck, just wait for me. I promise I won’t be any longer than I need to.

Brenna responded, and it caught me off guard because it wasn’t her usual style:

K. I’m sure I will figure it out.

I wondered what was going on with her, but I didn’t have time to think about it because my phone immediately rang.
