"I’m not sure," he answered. "Right now it’s so swollen that it’s hard to tell. They’re going to do x-rays, and we’ll go from there."

"Yeah," I said. "I guess there’s nothing we can do besides wait."

"How badly does it hurt?"

"When I just sit here quietly, it hurts a bit, but if I try to move it at all, it starts throbbing. I know there is no way I could put any weight on it."

"Do you want me to go with you when they take you back?" he asked.

"Yes, please," I said, feeling my eyes well up with tears for the first time since it happened.

"Okay," Josh said quietly. He reached down and gently grabbed my hand.

"I don’t want to keep you here too long," I said. "I know you left Rylan at home."

"Don’t worry about it," he answered. "I called his grandmother and she is going over to the house now. She will be there when he wakes up, and then he is going to spend the day and night with them. I will get him tomorrow."

"Are you sure?" I asked. I felt so bad keeping him away from Rylan. I had met Rylan earlier in the week, and he was a very sweet kid. He had offered to help sweep the deck of the B&B and had suggested that I install a basketball hoop on the back patio. I really felt guilty knowing that my accident would disrupt Rylan’s day.

"I’m positive," Josh said. "Trust me, Rylan loves spending time with his grandparents. He is going to be just fine."

"Okay," I said, feeling a bit better.

Four hours later, he wheeled me out of the hospital. Thankfully my ankle was not broken, but it was a severe sprain. I had medication to help with the pain and swelling, but I had to stay off it completely for two weeks, and then I would get a walking cast for four weeks after that.

Josh took me back to my place and helped me get set up on the couch.

"Alright," he said. "I think you have everything you need. You have a cup of coffee right there, the remote control, and your phone is charging on the table next to you."

"Thank you so much," I said. "I think I should probably tell my parents."

"Yes, they need to know what’s going on. Before you call them though, are you hungry?" he asked.

"Yes!" I said. I hadn’t eaten anything all day, and I knew that Josh hadn’t either.

"Me too. While you call your parents, I am going to run over to the Surf Shack and pick up some food for us. Is there anything else you need? I could stop by the grocery store."

"I can’t think of anything I need," I said.

"Well, if anything comes to mind, text me and let me know. Otherwise, I’ll be back in a little bit."

"I’ll see you soon," I said.

He gave a small wave and headed out the door. I picked up my phone and called my mom.

Chapter 10

Josh

As I drove towards the Surf Shack, I couldn’t believe everything that had happened.

I had been so excited for Brenna when I saw her catch the wave, but then I saw it getting away from her. I watched her bail out, but when she started going, I noticed she didn’t kick the board away from her. The next thing I knew, it came flying back and smashed into her ankle. At first, I thought it had hit her in the head, and I got to her as soon as I could.

She had been so calm, making it easy for me to get her out of danger and back to shore.

When I arrived at the Surf Shack, I was happy to see that it wasn’t too crowded. The college-aged girl at the window smiled as I approached.

“Hey, Josh,” she said flirtatiously. “Do you want your usual?”
