“That’s a gigantic sigh. I braked in time!”
Cara had been staring sightlessly out the side window. “It’s not you. I have to have a conversation I don’t want to.”
“Finally going to tell Wes how you feel about him?”
“Shut up.” Cara didn’t have the emotional energy to defend herself. She’d tell Declan first. He’d be pissed if he weren’t the first to know.
Knowing her brother was at work, she keyed a quick text asking him to call when he had a chance, fully expecting him to call her that night after work.
Two hours later, she was on her way back to the trailer with Skye when her phone buzzed in her pocket. Her brother’s face flashed on her screen.
“Holy hotness! Who’s that?” Skye asked.
“Gross. That’s my brother. I’ll call him back.” This was not a conversation she wanted to have in front of anyone else.
“Fuck me sideways! That isn’t someone’s brother. That is sin wrapped in a skin suit!” Skye parked the cart and grabbed Cara’s arm. “Seriously, why is everyone you know so hot?”
Skye’s words did what Cara thought was impossible today—they made her laugh. “I thought you were in love with my friend Amara?”
“A girl can have options.” Skye grinned. “Can you restock our bags? I’m heading to the bathroom. I need to cool myself off after all that.” She waved a hand as she drove away.
Her humor quickly disappeared. She locked the trailer door and sat in one of the makeup chairs. Declan picked up on the second ring.
Cara stood again and fidgeted with the products on the counter. “I only have a couple minutes before I have to get back to the set. We wrap today. I didn’t think I’d hear from you this early.”
“I’m in the car on the way to the airport, so I thought I’d take a chance you might be free.”
Cara chewed her lip. Shereallydidn’t want to say the words.
“Cara? Are you still there?”
“I need to tell you something, but you can’t freak out and overreact in classic Declan style, okay? I wouldn’t bother you, but Wes thought I should tell my family…”
She could tell Declan was trying to keep his voice calm, but he had picked up on her anxiety. “Tell your family what? Are you pregnant?”
“What? No!” She took a deep breath and then let the words out in a rush. “I have a stalker. It’s the same one from last year.”
There was a beat of silence. “I must have misunderstood you. Did you say, ‘it’s the same one from last year’?” The darkness in his voice raised goosebumps on her arms.Oh, shit!He was going to overreact. “Start from the beginning. And leave nothing out.”
Cara was just finishing her story when someone tried the door and, finding it locked, started knocking.
“I’ve got to go, Dec.”
“Hang on. You can’t tell me all this and then go back to work!”
“Cara, are you in there?” She heard Skye call out.
“Sorry, Declan. I really have to go. I’m not in any danger. There are people around me at work, and Wes is putting in a new security system at home—”
“Not good enough,” Declan barked.
“I’ll call you tonight. Promise.” Cara ended the call feeling horribly guilty and opened the door for Skye.
The woman cast a suspicious glance around the trailer. “What were you doing?”
“I was on the phone. I must have locked the door by mistake.” Cara mentally crossed her fingers.
Skye didn’t look convinced. But, after only one irritated look when she realized Cara hadn’t restocked the bag, Skye chattered nonstop about the wrap party the following night.
