Silence met Bash’s announcement.

“You kidnapped Kendall,” she squeaked.

“What? Fuck no! I’m at her office. She asked to meet with me.”

“Uh…” Hopper cleared her throat. “Okay.”

It came to Kendall that Hopper suddenly sounded so nervous because she thought she and her letter had been outed.

“Hello, Hopper,” Kendall said briskly. “I really don’t have time to talk to you now. I’m calling about Jana.”

“Jana? My niece?”

If only. “Your daughter. I know you put her up for adoption.”

“Lies!”

She didn’t want to alienate the woman, but she needed the call to end. “I have several documents and letters I want to discuss with you.”

“D-documents and l-letters?”

Kendall hoped she understood. “Yes, unfortunately, one detailing certain situations was destroyed by accident.”

Bash lifted a brow.

“I need you to fill in the blanks,” Kendall said, ignoring him, “before I break the news to Johnnie.”

“Still going on about Jana,” Bash sighed, falling for her diversion.

Hopper huffed. “Heard you were a busy bitch, Kendall. Always getting into shit. Give this bitch my number, Bash. Then, I expect you to lose those fucking digits. Understand,Miss High-and-Mighty Attorney?”

“Take my number,” Kendall said coldly. She felt as if Hopper knew her game, so she had to play along. She recited the phone number. “Call me tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m.”

“Fuck you.” She disconnected.

Bash winced as Kendall slid her jewelry to him. “Hopper’s a bad bitch. Juiciest cunt ever. After she fucked, I’d bring her to my room and just smell her pussy for hours. Watching the cum leak out of her.”

Kendall recoiled. “Ewwww.”

“Before we fucked, I’d spend the evening getting high off the aroma of clean, high-class snatch. Then I’d suck your clit, blow on it, and tongue fuck you.”

He watched her closely. She knew he wanted a reaction. Over her dead fucking body.

Bash leaned forward and smiled at her. “I’m so much better than the brainless blond. Give me a shot. You won’t be sorry.”

Scowling and getting to her feet, she stalked to the door and threw it open, then crooked her finger at Johnnie. He didn’t smile; neither did she. “Can you come in for a moment?”

He stood and glowered at her, but he stomped past her and waited until she closed the door.

“Can you watch the food for me, Matt?”

Turning away from the stove and setting the spoon aside, Mattie frowned at Rory. “We’re not halfway done.”

True, but nearly an hour had passed since he’d gotten DeLuca’s call. He wasn’t even sure if Bash was still at the meeting. He hoped Mom kept Bash entertained and found the answers to all her questions. But Rory needed to talk to Bash himself. He needed to find out about Molly once and for all.

“I have something to do.”

Mattie glanced around the messy kitchen. The sink overflowed with cutting boards, knives, mixing bowls, vegetable peelings and meat scraps. Rory had chosen rarely used plates and glasses and brought them from the dish closet. They were on the island, waiting for Mattie to wash them. She’d refused. Rory left them there, hoping she’d change her mind.
