Dinah’s resentment toward Meggie stemmed from mental illness. In comparison,Meggiehad absolutely no reason forherannoyance. Like Dinah always said, Meggie was just spoiled.
Back in her seat, Meggie drummed her fingers on the counter.
She was surprised Christopher was still at the club. He hadn’t even texted her.
Leaving his brothers in a lurch wouldn’t help lessen their obvious dislike of her. Nor would it helpChristopher.
God, she didnotwant to go back to the club tonight. Nyx had probably regained consciousness. Meggie doubted that witch would say what really happened and all the boys from the youngest to the oldest were crazy about her. They wouldn’t want Christopher to retaliate and jeopardize their eye candy.
Meggie kept her mouth shut in the interest of her husband’s effective leadership. Satisfied bikers made loyal brothers.
Grabbing her phone, she intended to call Christopher and tell him she would order pizza as she’d originally decided.
A message from an unknown number appeared on her screen.
Hey,it’s Easton. You got my résumé?
She hadn’t checked her email since she arrived home.
Meggie: Sorry, no. Haven’t had the chance to check email.
A multimedia message downloaded. When she opened it, she found a side-by-side photo of Easton and the actor he resembled. The wordthiswas written under Easton’s picture andthatover the other one.
She allowed herself a minute to ogle both men, fanned her flaming cheeks, then laughed at his boldness. She’d definitely put him in his place.
In a moment.
She studied the two pictures again. They were both extraordinarily handsome.
Biting her lip, she fired off a quick text.
Meggie: I’m not impressed, Easton. This is highly unprofessional. If you wish serious consideration as my financial advisor, youwillrespect my husband.
Easton: I’m just having a little fun, sweetheart. Lighten up. Johnnie said you were easy-going and entertaining. That I’d love working for you. He respects you highly. He knows my last employment put a deep strain on me.
Guilt destroyed Meggie’s indignation. She’d thought so harshly of Johnnie when he’d spoken so highly of her. He’d stopped gaslighting her days ago and seemed to have returned to normal. Not entirely good, but much better than he’d recently acted. Besides, she lashed out at Easton because she’d been admiring his stupid photo.
Her moment of happiness evaporated, and she sniffled.
“Mom?”
At the sound of Axel’s sweet voice, she set her phone down and lifted her head.
“Why you crying?”
“It’s been a long day, love,” she said softly.
He studied her. “I know just how to make you feel better.”
She opened her arms. “A hug?”
“Nuh uh. Stay here ‘til I call you. K?”
“I’m about to start dinner,” she said, dropping her arms. “I’ll be in the kitchen for a while.”
“CJ knows how to cook. He can finish once I get my surprise together.”
“Where is CJ?”
