We both fell into hysterical laughter until I was clutching my side, tears running down my cheeks.
“You want steak and potatoes for dinner?” a deep voice asked through the line, and Miranda squeaked in surprise. My hand slapped to my open mouth, and I felt my cheeks heating up.
“Uh... how much did you hear?” she asked Khol while I listened in, silent as a mouse.
“Enough,” he purred, and my eyebrows lifted. A girlish giggle met my ears, and I quickly said goodbye, disconnecting the call before I heard things I never, ever wanted to hear. Or think about.Blah.
I lay back on my bed, thinking about nothing and everything. Sloane and Annie were safe. Maven wasn’t Maven, but Gran had her Rick back. Cam had his brother again. I still couldn't believe I had a sister... and that I was going to meet her soon. Hopefully she'd agree to moving here. That was another selfish thing Laurie had done, keeping this girl hidden, not letting her know her family, and for what? To use her as a pawn of some sort? It was bullshit, and it really pissed me off. I made up my mind right then that I was going to do everything I could to be the best possible sister, and help this girl do whatever she wanted.
And the babies. The girls. I put a hand to my belly, surprised to find it feeling firm and slightly swollen. My babies.
Yawning, I stretched out. Man, I could go for a little nap, which was ridiculous because I hadn't even been awake for long. Maybe I was already feeling those early pregnancy symptoms? My stomach growled at that moment—also ridiculous, because I'd just eaten.
The door creaked as it slowly opened, and Kai's handsome face poked through. “Hey, pretty Cub.”
I smiled wide. “Hi, handsome Alpha.”
Kai shut the door behind him and lay down with his head on my lap. My hands found his hair, like always, and he purred contentedly as I massaged his scalp.
“Let's do something fun tonight,” he suggested.
“Fun? Like what?”
“Hmm, I don't know. Something different. I think we need out of the house.” He rolled onto his back and looked up at me.
“I have been wanting to go to the new bar and grille that Master Rupert had put in at Magic Stixxx?”
Kai grinned wolfishly. “I'm so down. I've been desperate to go there ever since Fischer told me about the cock climbing wall!”
“Oh gods,” I groaned, pretending to be annoyed.
* * *
Surprisingly, everyone seemed on board and excited by the idea of a night out. I invited Gran and Rick, but she declined. I wasn't sure where things stood between them, but I was happy that she was at least getting some answers.
I sat shotgun as Cam drove. It was just the two of us, since the others opted to take the bikes. Bram was riding Cam's bike with Faris on the back, and I could only imagine the discussion that was taking place at this very moment.
“You look beautiful, little witch,” Cam said, reaching for my hand.
“Thank you. You look sexy, in a dark, murdery kind of way.”
He smiled roguishly and winked. His hair was in a knot on the top of his head, a few strands coming loose around his face. Dark jeans, combat boots, and a black henley completed his look. My mouth watered as I studied him. Cam was hands down one of the hottest men I'd ever seen. Also one of the biggest. His presence wasn't just a whole damn mood, it was like a whole damn possession. One so strong it’d take an exorcism to remove.
Cam shifted in his seat and I smiled smugly. I'd selected a pair of high-waisted skinny jeans and paired it with a low-cut white tank with black polka dots. I'd barely escaped the house unfucked.
“Are you upset with me?” I suddenly asked quietly, needing to know where we stood.
He glanced over at me. “I was. I was furious.”
I nodded. That's what I figured, so it didn't surprise me. “And you're not now?”
“No, baby girl. I'm not furious. I can't say I'm happy, though. I understand why you did it, but dammit, the uncertainty of whether you were okay? It killed me,” he grumbled, running his hand through his beard.
“I'm sorry. I just couldn't leave him. I love him.”
He reached over and took my hand in his. “I know, baby girl. I love him too. Thank you for bringing him back.” He brought my hand to his mouth and kissed my knuckles. “Although I did nearly break his face for what he did to you earlier.”
I narrowed my eyes at him. “That was not his fault.”
