My life was so different from how it had been a year ago. My every waking moment was consumed with thoughts of Tanner and how happy I was. Life was fuller than I’d ever imagined. I’d been doing okay when we’d first met, but something had blossomed inside me the second Tanner and I spent that first afternoon together.

“Do you want Italian tonight or Chinese?” His voice sounded drowsy.

“Either.” I smiled. “Don’t fall asleep, or you’re going to get a nasty surprise when a wave comes.”

 “You’d save me.”

I laughed. “Yes, I would certainly try.”

He lifted his head. “Oh, by the way, Gordon called while you were out. He’s coming to town on Saturday.”

“He is?” Sometimes I still worried that maybe Tanner hadn’t truly forgiven Gordon. But he seemed to have. He never showed any resentment in his tone or expression when he mentioned Gordon.

 “Yep. He sounded well.”

“I’m glad.” I flicked my gaze to his and found him watching me. Sprinkles of water glistened on his smooth cheeks.

“You always get a weird look on your face when the subject of Gordon comes up.”

 I frowned. “I do?”

 “Yes.”

 “I didn’t realize I did that.”

 “You do.”

“I will try not to look weird when we mention him from now on.” He continued to watch me, and I met his gaze again. “Why are you staring at me?”

“Because I know that something is going on in that head of yours.”

 “No.”

“Seth.” His tone was chiding. “Talk to me.”

I sighed, feeling uneasy. “I guess I just worry that you secretly harbor resentment toward him.”

 He wrinkled his brow. “What?”

“It wouldn’t be strange if you did still resent him.”

“Seth, he saved my life.” He paddled closer. “I only like and respect Gordon.”

 “Are you sure?”

 “I’m positive.”

 “Okay.” I laughed sheepishly.

He laughed. “You’re not usually a worrier.”

“I know. But you two are the most important people in my life. It would kill me if you didn’t like each other.”

“Well, I like him.” He grinned. “And I’m so delightful, I know he must like me.”

 “Who couldn’t?”

“I think it’s physically impossible not to adore me.”
