“Did he tell you not to leave the country? He told me not to leave town.”

“He asked that I not leave until we had a chance to talk.” He shrugged. “But I wanted to hang around longer anyway to be sure you were okay.”

 “Of course.” I laughed.

“How are you and Tanner doing?” He wrinkled his brow. “That was a pretty traumatic way to begin your life as a married couple.”

“Yeah. It was horrible.” I grimaced. “But actually, me and Tanner are doing great.”

“Is that right?” He looked pleased. “I’m so glad.”

“I think we’re actually going to try and make a go of this.” My face warmed. It was so weird to admit I cared about someone. “I even… I even came clean with him.”

Shock rolled across Gordon’s features. “What?”

“I… I told him the truth about me. About my past.”

His face went slack, and he blinked as if he didn’t quite believe his ears. “You told him about it all?”

“Yes.” I laughed breathlessly. “He didn’t care, Gordon. He still loves me.”

“That… that’s great.” He wrinkled his brow. “I’m shocked, but so happy for you, Seth. I really am. Tanner is a good man. I wasn’t sure he’d accept you if he knew… Obviously I misjudged him.”

 “I did too.”

He forced a smile. “Wow, such great news.” He shook his head. “I was terrified Douglas would ruin everything for you. I… I overheard him trying to extort money from you the day of the wedding.”

I widened my eyes. “You did? I didn’t realize you’d heard any of that.”

“Unfortunately, yes.” His thick silver brows pulled together. “What kind of man shakes down his brand-new son-in-law on the day of his wedding?”

“I guess he was desperate. Apparently Tanner’s dad was in debt to some guy.”

“And Douglas thought you would be easy to blackmail.” His mouth was a grim line. “What a greedy, pigheaded man.”

I was a little surprised at how angry Gordon sounded toward Douglas. “I just want the cops to find whoever killed Douglas. Did you know that someone threw a rock through Martha Trenton’s window?”

Gordon shook his head. “No. I had no idea.”

 “It happened yesterday.”

“Poor woman.” He sighed. “Sounds like someone must really have it in for the Trenton family.”

“Yeah. It’s starting to look like that.”

“I’m just glad you were with Tanner last night when it happened. You have an alibi this time. No way Detective Pole could blame you for the rock incident.”

I hesitated at his statement, and I lifted my gaze to his. “Wait… I thought you didn’t know about the rock incident.”

 “I didn’t.”

“But… then how would you know I was with Tannerwhenit happened?”

He gave a strained laugh. “Oh, I just assumed you two lovebirds were together.”

“Tanner has barely been around since the murder. It’s weird you’d know he was with me at that exact time. Or that you’d even know when the rock was thrown through her window. How would you know any of that?”

“Lucky guess?” He continued to avoid my gaze.
