He pulled a sheet of paper from the folder. “But as I said, it’s way too early to jump to conclusions about who hurt your dad.” He wrinkled his brow, scanning the paper in his hand. “Did your husband ever come clean with you about the reason he argued with your dad?”

My cheeks felt warm as I held his curious gaze. It was a little embarrassing that he probably knew more about Seth than I did. “No.”

“Really?” He frowned. “Seems odd he’d hide that from you.”

“He’s very private.”

“Of course.” He nodded. “Some people are like that.”

“Shouldn’t you be asking me about my whereabouts?” I lifted my chin. “Seems like you want to talk about everybody but me.”

His light gaze flickered. “You were never out of sight. You had no opportunity to kill your dad.” He smirked. “Trust me, we checked.”

“Seth was barely ever out of sight too.”

“That’s not quite true.” He leaned back in his chair. “He was outside alone when he found the body.”

“He didn’t do it. I can’t even believe you would think for five seconds he would.”

“Tanner, do you want us to find the killer?” He sounded annoyed.

“Of course.”

“Then you need to understand we have to look at everyone and everything. Small things mean big things when you’re dealing with a murder case. Just because you love your husband, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t do my job.”

I hung my head and sighed. “I want you to do your job. I just think you’re getting off track if you try and go after Seth.”

“I’m not going after anyone. I’m following the facts.”

“He wouldn’t hurt anyone.”

He clenched his jaw. “How much do you really know about your husband, Tanner?”

“I know he’s a good, kind person.” I crossed my arms. I didn’t like the tone of his voice—it made me nervous. I could tell he knew things he wasn’t telling me.

“Did you know your father ran a background check on Seth?”

I widened my eyes, shock rippling through me. “What?”

“He checked into Seth’s past.”

“Why would he do that?” I felt embarrassed that I’d had no idea my dad had done that. “He had no right to do that.”

“You should talk to your husband about the argument he had with your dad.”

“Are you saying that’s connected to what my dad found on him?”

“I believe it was.”

I rubbed my face tiredly. “I don’t understand any of this. None of this makes sense.”

He gave me a sympathetic look. “Yes. I’m sure this is all very stressful.”

From everything Detective Pole had hinted at, it was obvious he knew a hell of a lot of shit about Seth that he wasn’t going to share. I decided that I needed to have a serious talk with Seth as soon as we were done here. I needed him to know I loved him and would stand by him. We all had pasts. I hadn’t always done everything the best way; I had regrets like anyone. I wanted Seth to know that I wasn’t perfect either, and that he could trust me with his secrets. He didn’t need to be perfect for me to love him.
