“I see.”

“Do you think it was a robbery?” I couldn’t think of any reason why someone would murder my dad other than that.

“Not sure yet.” He gave another one of his vapid smiles. “Do you have any idea what your husband and your father argued about?”

My gut clenched and I flinched slightly. “No. Um… I’m sure it wasn’t anything important.”

 “But you knew they argued?”

 Shit.

My face was hot. “I didn’t mention it because it didn’t seem like a big deal.”

“But you don’t know why they argued, so you wouldn’t really know that, now would you?”

I exhaled. “Look, I know where you’re going with this, but I feel like you’re going down the wrong path. I know Seth. He’s not a violent person.”

He nodded, pressing his lips together. “I guess anyone would find it difficult to think their spouse is capable of murder.”

“It’s not just because of that. It’s because of who he is that I can’t see him doing this.”

 “Sure. Sure. I get you.”

I lifted my chin. “My family is wealthy. We could easily be the target of robbery.”

“Absolutely. I couldn’t agree more.” He pushed his tongue against his cheek. “Only problem is your father’s wallet was still on him, as was his Richard Mille watch.”

The blood drained from my face, and my throat went dry.

He continued. “I believe those watches start at thirty grand? I find it hard to believe a thief would have left the money and that pricey watch behind.”

 “What are you saying?”

He shrugged. “My gut says the motive wasn’t robbery. But stranger things have happened. Maybe it was a robbery and the perp got interrupted. Right? We don’t really know much at the moment.”

I attempted to control the panic spreading through me. “So what do we do now?”

“Well, we’re going to let the forensic team do their job, and I’m going to ask that some of you come in tomorrow for some follow-up questions.”

 “Okay.”

He pulled a card from his pocket and held it out. “If you think of anything else, give me a call. Otherwise, I’d love to speak to you and Seth tomorrow at the station. Address is on the card. Anytime is fine. Just call and let me know when you’ll be coming by, and I’ll be there.”

“Sounds good.” I tucked the card into my pocket, feeling agitated. By all rights I should have been in his corner; after all, he was only trying to solve my father’s murder. But because I could feel him circling Seth like a shark, it put me in a weird position.

He walked away and I headed straight for Seth. He looked wary as I walked up. His tie hung loosely around his neck, and his jacket was slung over his arm. “You ready to get out of here?”

 “Hours ago.” His voice wobbled.

“I think I should stay with Mom tonight.” I glanced over at my mom. “I don’t want her alone.”

“I agree. That’s a good idea.” He sounded so agreeable it almost hurt my feelings. “I’ll stay at my shop tonight.” His eyes glittered warily. “I’d feel better there.”

“Okay.” I understood why he didn’t want to stay at the new house alone. Not after a night like tonight. I met Gordon’s weary gaze. “You have somewhere to stay, Gordon?”

“Oh, yes. I have my hotel.” He put his arm around Seth’s shoulders. “I’m just worried about our boy here.”

“I’m fine.” Seth laughed weakly. “You don’t always have to worry so much.”
