Jack’s phone rings from somewhere on the floor of my bedroom. He slides out of me and rolls to his back before doing an ab curl to put himself into a sitting position. I watch him look around the room before reaching down for his phone, which has now stopped ringing.

“Gotta get rid of this condom,” he says while showing me the phone screen. “If Finn calls back, tell him I’m good, better than good. I think last night rattled him and he’s probably just checking in.”

He slides his phone to the bedside table, winks, then turns and walks to my ensuite while I unashamedly stare at his perfect shoulders, back, and arse while being eaten alive by the shame of what I’ve just allowed to happen.

CHAPTER15

Jack.

I can’t wipethe smile from my face as I get rid of the condom and clean up. This feels so fucking right, and for something to feel so right after so many years, there’s no way it can be wrong.

Leaning on the edge of the sink in Scarlett’s immaculate bathroom, I draw a deep breath as I look at my reflection in the mirror.

“Donotfuck this up. You’ve been given a second chance, donotlet that girl go again.”

Turning, I head back out to the bedroom, and know the instant my eyes land on Scarlett, knees to her chest in the bed, eyes anywhere but on me, that I need to say or do something before I lose her to regret.

Before I reach the bed, my phone rings again. Scarlett picks it up, saying, “Milly,” as she hands it to me.

“Sup?” I ask my sister.

“You need to get your arse home right the fuck now.”

My gut twists as my heart lurches around in my chest.

“You okay? Finn okay? Mick?”

“No, Jackson, none of us are fucking okay.”

“Mills, what the fuck? Is Finn there? I just had a missed call from him.”

Using one hand, I pull on my jocks, and then my jeans as I talk.

“Finn’s been in the city with Ava. I’ve just spoken to him, he’s on his way home now.”

“You gonna start making sense and tell me what the fuck’s going on then?”

Scarlett passes me my tee and hoodie, and it’s only then I realise she’s gotten dressed while I’ve been talking.

“Thanks, babe?” I tell her with a chin lift, but she still doesn’t look at me.

“Babe?” Milly questions. “Things have obviously progressed since I dropped you off.”

“Never fucking mind that, just tell me what the fuck is going on,” I snap as I watch Scarlett leave the room.

“Eden’s at the front door,” my sister states, and it’s a good job I’m already sitting on the edge of the bed, otherwise my arse would be on the floor.

“What the fuck?” I question while instinctively looking over my shoulder to make sure Scarlett’s not within earshot.

Things are just warming up between us. I can tell by the way she hasn’t once met my eyes since we fucked, that I’m already gonna have my work cut out convincing her to at least give us a go, without adding an unexpected house call from my ex to the mix.

“Where is she? What the fuck does she want?” I reel off my next questions before my sister gets a word in.

“Out the front. No idea, I didn’t ask.”

“I’m on my way, don’t let her in.”

“Why? I was gonna bake her a cake, make her a cup of tea, and invite her in and blow dry her hair,” is my sister’s facetious response.
